#40 Jordan Leopold was one of the worst defensemen I've ever seen play for the Flames
One can only conclude that you were born after 2004.

NHL salaries are league minimum, AHL salary is quite rich
According to 960 guys, Gulutzan indicated that Bartkowski would play relatively soon and the 960 guys wouldn't be surprised if he is in the line up against Vancouver.

Such a pointless move if Wideman isn't in the press box Saturday.
Wideman is a big problem but let's not pretend that our rotating #6 defensemen of Jokipakka, Kulak and Wotherspoon has been anything other than a disappointment.

Before we all go proclaiming that Bartkowski is an upgrade on Wideman, there's a reason why Canuck fans called him the Tank Commander. He was leading their charge to a top-5 draft pick.
With those AHL numbers, that's like a cross between a 1 way and 2 way deal. Certainly makes it costlier to send him down. He is being signed to play.
I don't disagree that he will play, but I think that he will play to see what he's got. Not because of the salary. The salary is structured like that to get him to sign a deal. We needed him to meet the expansion draft requirements and nothing else. He is a hired gun for one purpose only, if he provides more than that then great.

So you want to trade Engelland and send the message to the fans and team there is no drive to make the playoffs? F that.
If the Flames lose most of the games from now until then, then it would be more responsible to do that and just ride out the string with Kevin Kulak and Bartkowski on the blue line. There are 6 games left between now and the deadline. If Calgary only goes 2-4-0 or even goes 3-3-0, going into seller mode might make more sense.
Bartkowski is a quality option in case of any eventuality. If they sell hard, then they'll have an actual NHL calibre D-man to throw out there. If they make a run for it, they'll have someone viable for the expansion draft and a decent #7 filler guy for next year. Can't hurt either way.

1) I don't think many people think he's an upgrade on Wideman, I think most see him as a lateral move (but better fit due to his speed) at 15% of the price. And the $4M difference can fill another hole.
2) I don't give a #### what Nuck fans think - he, and their team, were crap. So what? Different situation. I look more at the track record in Boston. And yes, that was less than stellar. But it wasn't the steaming pile of crap that Vancouver was.
