from nhl.com (note: numbers don't add up exactly, probably because of the way I chose the end of month and beginning of month dates, but close enough):
(goals / chances / % / rank for the month (not cummulative):
Oct: 4 / 29 / 13.8% / 22nd
Nov: 4 / 33 / 12.1% / 27th
Dec: 5 / 44 / 11.4% / 26th
Jan: 7 / 40 / 17.5% / 15th
Feb: 11 / 44 / 25% / 7th
M/A: 13 / 67 / 19.4% / 10th
to put it more clearly:
Oct - Dec: 14 / 109 / 12.8% / 30th
Jan - Apr: 32 / 155 / 20.6% / 7th
Yes, the Flames PP was 7th overall from New Year's on.
Pretty dramatic change from the first half of the season.

Big differences being Gelinas in charge and Hamilton getting the minutes?

^ if I change the start date from Jan 1st to Dec 31st for the 2nd half data, the Flames move from 7th overall to 9th. New Years Eve must have been a ####ty night for the PP!

If you followed this metric your team would suck.
The fact of the matter is that a successful team needs BOTH defensemen that can skate extremely well, move the puck, and set up plays in the offensive zone AND defensemen who can eliminate opposition offense in the defensive zone. A player like Doughty who can do both is the ideal, but also an extreme rarity. An offensively gifted defenseman like Dougie Hamilton is absolutely an integral part of any championship team.

There are a lot of variables. Yes, Wideman struggled in the first part of the season and Hamilton was better.
But Monahan, Gaudreau and Giordano were probably better too. Really hard to pinpoint something with so many moving parts.

Yeah, that's a brilliant idea. How quickly will you turn on him when he inevitably struggles?

The Flames were close to a PO spot when the PP turned around. It was not "garbage time".
Between this and "let's replace Hamilton with Andersson 1/4 of the way in" you are simply embarrassing yourself at this point.

Always with the extremes... you do realize there is a lot of grey area between "in love with Hamilton" and "Hamilton is hot garbage anchor that needs to go".

I don't think there are many who are "head over heels" for Hamilton.
From what I've read in this thread, most are admitting that he hasn't been good so far this season, but with the caveat that none of our defense really has.
It seems that you're expecting a relatively young defenseman to be playing like a veteran, which is a little unfair considering when most defense don't hit their stride until their mid 20's.
I personally don't think he's been as bad defensively as some people in this forum. I cringe every time I look at the gt thread after a goal against when Hamilton has been on the ice, because he's inevitably blamed whether at fault or not.
We also don't really have anyone to step into his position if we traded him for anything other than another 3-4 d man.

I really hope Hamilton doesnt get Phaneuf'ed.
I feel as though the team see's him as the #3 dman even if hes paired on the 3rd pairing, I would like to see him and Engelland together on the 2nd pairing.
23 year old 6'6 Dman that can put up points and skate, that pretty unique.. we should be patient. No reason to treat this guy like Colborne and 2020 Jankowski (just a joke for my dad).

I agree with Yanda, another panic deal like the Phaneuf one puts the Flames right back where they were at that time, no further forward as a franchise.
The GM needs to be patient, we were not going to be a playoff team this year anyway, if anything take a longer look at some of the older players as trade bait and retain salary.
There is no deal, no magic button that is going to turn around the team quickly.
