I agree, especially with your "different type of person" comment. Some folks who choose to occupy the role have a very military (perhaps because they were in the armed forces) look which can also be intimidating, marine style haircuts, tattoos, Oh! and the terminator sun glasses that seem to be so popular.
These are just observations in case somebody wants to throw feces at me. I have a great deal of respect for the police, I'm just turned off by the image being projected in recent years.

I think it's hard to argue that the top pic Methanolic posted isnt less intimidating compared to the black and white one.

Ok well I think you're seeing what you want to see. I see a late model black sedan with white doors. The very shape of new vehicles with the hard lines as opposed to the rounded edges of a 90s/00s sedan are entirely different.
I guess I'm saying that I think you guys are just deciding to criticize something and it's, in my opinion, completely ridiculous.

Reason: That's not a Crown Vic

Well those people need to get dogpiled by three giant cops before they know what to really be scared of. The car is not scary.

you really should post two pics from the same perspective. The eye level view of a car will always look more aggressive them the wide view.
Also I think most of the increase aggression is due to the car itself. The hard square lines currently used on cars in general are much more aggressive then the old roundier futuristic utopia style used before.
If you had the same bumper and and the same paint as the new vehicle on the old vehicle and shot from the same angle i don't think the old vehicle would look more aggressive.
The only piece you might have a point on is the larger bumper. But i don't think that's a significant difference.

I perceive the vehicles to have an aggressive, intimidating and militarized appearance. I think it sends the wrong message visually.

Those new cruisers look pretty darn intimidating. I don't care all that much, but when pulled over I've felt like Robo cop is going to step out.

Apparently modern means "scary and intimidating" all I see is a modern look to the vehicle. As opposed to the fierce look of a Crown Vic.
And I wouldn't say the euros are less heavy handed then the North American police. We have a large contingent of former UK officers in the CPS and they are frequently on the receiving end of a excessive force complaint.

Oh FFS. Did you take that as a tough guy statement? Now you're scared of me too, because of my black truck? I was joking that there's an actual topic here, and that is the dogpile of three cops on one little guy. But I've clearly hurt your feelings, and I will go away now.

Relax. We disagree. You perceive the world around you much differently than I do. I question and scrutinize everything.

Really? Based on what? I've travelled Europe extensively and they do not mess around. Do you see para-military police armed with machine guns in airports, subways and tourist attractions in Canada? Well they are a regular sight in many European countries.

Geez, 4X4, I didn't mean it to come off as me being scared of them or being sensitive or adding it as a dogpile on police officers. I defend CPS more than most on here, it was just an off the cuff remark based on what I remembered from when it was being discussed at the time.
I pretty clearly do remember there being articles on American police forces going back to black and white for the very purpose of intimidation and more strong "presence" around town, same reason as the more in your face mods on newer cars.
You can say it's ridiculous to point it out, or in Transplant's case outright mock it like it's fantasy dreamed up by anti-policers, but it definitely is a thing.
And the idea behind it isn't some misguided belief that it's going to change everything, it's just another small step in the militarization of police forces in the States, and I was just mildly unhappy with Canadian police forces following suit.
Sorry if it came off as some silly, pie in the sky, anti cop fantasy.

I'm scared of the white and blue old style cars because those are the ones that chased me as a kid. The new ones just look like every other police car from every other city.

You guys are hilarious. Services across Canada went to Black & White a few years back to save money. Rather than decalling up a whole car they buy them black, the white part on the door is essentially a big door sized sticker.

Hm, curious about it, I did a little digging. The old Blue and Whites were Crown Vic's, which Ford stopped making in 2011. So the most recent model possible CPS would have would be 5 years old (which is pretty good for a police vehicle, I'd imagine). I found a pic of a 2011 Crown Victoria done up in Black and White. Note the harder edges around the hood and trunk.
Figured I'd see if I could find a "less scary/intimidating" shot of the new Interceptor. Found one kinda like the picture of the old Crown Vic earlier
Doesn't seem scary or intimidating to me. Though I suppose one could say it's got a bit more of an aggressive looking 'stance' due to the bigger shocks on the back raising the back a little.

Yup. And that's just because the Taurus' they have now are all wheel drive. Crown Vic's were rear wheel.
