Whether they like him or not, a goalie who is looking extremely good is worth exploring, including at a significant price. The odds are just so much better than drafting a goalie. The Flames have consistently drafted goalies with good credentials (Irving, Krahn, Muzzatti, Kidd), but they just haven't panned out, aside from Vernon.

I mean, aside from panning out for other teams (Anderson).

At the time of the trade though wasn't the defense pretty lean for the Flames?

Definitely true now. But I wonder how it would have played out with Brossoit and Ortio fighting for ice time in the AHL.

Plus they had Gillies, Ramo, Berra, Ortio, and got a goalie back (Roy) who didn't look bad at the time.

The bigger question is. who hasn't flopped in the oilers system?

Why hasn't his jersey been retired yet?

This picture accurately sums up the Flames' 2013-14 and 2015-16 seasons, I'd say:

There is denying that, though. How many games did you watch before he was drafted and this season? What technical or physical aspect of his game is stagnating?

Goaltender progression is not measured by Junior/College Stats. Junior stats measure little more than the defense in front of the goalie. And goaltender upside is not measured by NHL-readiness.

I don't think we'll wind up with Murray, I'm sure it's Treliving just turning over stones looking for goalies. Glad to hear he's active sooner rather than later.

Pittsburgh also has Tristan Jarry who has been very good in the AHL as a 20 year old.

17 games played
11-3-3 with a .927 save % and a 2.09 GAA

This might make it more realistic that they'd move Matt Murray

If the price is right, I guess its the right move. But one thing the Oilers have shown is that going after the best backup or goalie in the minors year after year doesnt work unless you have the team in front of you. Fasth, Bryzgalov, Scrivens, Labarbera, and then getting rid of Dubnyk thinking he was the problem.
Goalies need time to figure it out, look at Gibson in Anaheim. I am not defending Ortio's season by any means, but I would not move on yet. I see way more talent in him then I ever saw in Dubnyk.

No. This ONLY applies to the Oilers. Every NHL team has a huge advantage on the Oilers at the outset: the presence of NHL defensemen. The Oilers have been so bad for so long that I have absolute certainty their goalies would perform better on any other team...Period.

Most NHL goalies are similar overall that a large portion of the difference in stats is due to the team in front of them. Guys like Quick/Price/Lundqvist would be good goalies in front of bad teams, especially Price...

Put any normal goalie in Edmonton and they'd be screwed, just like the whole group that they've tried.

Pittsburgh is definitely a team you want to be in talks with this time of year, as they make more mistakes than anyone at the trade deadline.
really? What mistakes have they all made? Just curious...

Not every individual move is a mistake, but include deals like Iginla and others they have definitely shown a consistent willingness to spend futures for present, which overall is a mistake.

They traded a 3rd for Stempniak one year when we were demanding a 2nd for Cammalleri. Why not get Cammalleri to play with Malkin and Crosby?

Every year they seem to overpay at the deadline to attempt to solve their weaknesses on the wing. Why they just don't solve that problem permanently and not have to rent solutions is beyond a lot of us. They also seem to ignore their problems defensively and try to acquire a team that can outscore other teams. The NHL doesn't really work like that as the Oilers have found out.
