First, martial law. Second, shoot to kill. That would be my directive as Sheriff. I believe I heard today that a cop was killed by a looter. Unbelievable. The cop is already risking his life to get these morons out of there. Its digusting they are subjected to addition peril.

Wow, this storm was worse than I thought....And it seems as though it's getting worse, not the storm, but the after effects.
Really, really disappointing to see looters like that. But you have to expect it, there are just those kind of people out there.

Well, N.O. has had some issues with civic corruption and police corruption in the past. My point being that for years in the 80's and 90's the law was almost a joke in N.O.
No excuse for shooting at cops of course, but some residents probably don't take the authority as seriously as other cities.

You have to take into account the extreme desperation these people already lived in before this disaster. Can you expect these people not to loot, when they are so poor, they couldn't even get out when the evactuation was called?
If I had to live like them, I can't guarentee I wouldn't be looting too.

Mostly they look like garden variety looters who would be shot at in most other circumstances. . . . .
Anyone watch CNN a few hours ago when they had on a lady who had survived the Biloxi wipeout? I only mention her because, standing amid the rubble of her home and the rubble of all her neighbours homes, with tears streaming down her face, she had the most amazing pile of curlers arranging her hair that appeared to be straight out of Trailer Trash Weekly. Not belittling her plight but I couldn't help but wonder when she would have had the time and the inclination to throw her hair up in binders like that. An amazing sight.

I saw her too, and thought the exact same thing. She is probably suffering from a bit of post traumatic stress disorder.

I would say sometimes it does. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do to survive.
I'm not saying it's right, but it might just be the reality of the situation. We can't expect everyone else to have the same moral standards as us.

Geez what a horrible situation, and it only appears to be getting worse.
This looting business seems to be getting too much attention though, considering the circumstances.
If Calgary was practically destroyed, would anyone want the government and police to be worried about protecting clothes and stereos on the Steven Avenue Mall and the slots in the Elbow River Casino? I wouldn't.

I have seen reports on a few channels showing people being arrested for looting a winn dixie. I mean come on, why not let them empty the grocery stores, they need it a lot more than the winn dixie chain does. Especially since that food will be long since bad by the time they re open. And shouldn't those cops be helping people anyway???

The problem is that often in situations like this, it will not be the people who most need the supplies who get it, but it will be the most violent. In many countries when looting occurs, it can escalate to all out civil disorder. Preventing looting is as much about maintaining order and preventing mobs, as it is about protecting property.

So being poor justifies stealing computers and TVs?
If someone is stealing a loaf of bread to feed himself, fine. If someone is trying to turn a profit, shoot the bas**rd.

Children's Hospital under seige
Tuesday, 11:45 p.m.
Late Tuesday, Gov. Blanco spokeswoman Denise Bottcher described a disturbing scene unfolding in uptown New Orleans, where looters were trying to break into Children's Hospital.
Bottcher said the director of the hospital fears for the safety of the staff and the 100 kids inside the hospital. The director said the hospital is locked, but that the looters were trying to break in and had gathered outside the facility.
The director has sought help from the police, but, due to rising flood waters, police have not been able to respond.
Bottcher said Blanco has been told of the situation and has informed the National Guard. However, Bottcher said, the National Guard has also been unable to respond.

That's a good point and all, and FA also made a good point about civil disorder, but considering the amount of death, destruction and total lack of basic services, the looting of computers and TVs seems to me to that it should be very low on the list of priorities.
Maybe it's just the media playing it up but it seems like the looting is getting a disproportionate amount of attention considering all the drowning/dying/potential for disease/homelessness/violence... that is going on.
Even from a cold-hearted economic sense, the cost of any looting will be microscopic compared to what will be spent to clean the mess up.
