If the Flames are paying quality assets to get Lehner and risk losing Ortio for free that is not the best asset management in my opinion

When you claim a player off waivers, you have to keep him in the NHL or else he must clear waivers before you can send him to the AHL. If you have a player who you claimed off waivers and put him on waivers yourself later in the same season, the team who originally owned his rights can re-claim him and send him to their AHL affiliate without putting him on waivers again.
In order to lose Ortio on waivers, there would have to be a team going into the final days of training camp with only one NHL calibre goalie that they like more than Ortio. That is highly unlikely.

This is true but a team with a 32 year old career backup they might make a move for Ortio and waive their vet. Perhaps he would pass through waivers (Markstrom did last year) but I am not sure I want the Flames taking that risk

Lol. But that's the type of character the Canucks are known for. They should sign him for that alone!

The team up north says hi. I'd bet they'd take him.

Chris Nichols @NicholsOnHockey
Dreger hears a team (not #Oilers) offered two second round picks for Cam Talbot and that didn't close the deal. #NYR
Rangers are going to come out like bandits for their backup

assuming it's two 2nd round picks for this year, these teams have 2 or more 2nd rounders:
Buffalo, Arizona, Edmonton, Columbus, New Jersey, Calgary

Better not be the Flames. I'd much rather keep those picks and draft some d-men.

I suspect, as others do, that Flames will pop up in almost every trade rumour this summer. It's all part of dilligently keeping tabs on what is happening.
I wonder where these leaks come from? The GMs? Must be, as a leaky PA would get fired and would only know that certain GMs are calling their bosses, not the details of what was discussed.

If you have a goalie or two that you want to move:
Rammo's rights (hey, take anything if you can get a pick for early contract talks)
Hiller
Ortio - has to pass waivers, less flexibility
Then it would make sense to know what goalies are worth, and when they might be off the market. All to maximize the value you get for your own assets.
Not sure if stirring the pot and driving demand would help you get more for Flames goalies.

Not buying that from Dreger. There are boatloads of goalies available and not that many teams looking.

Yeah, I think there are GMs that exploit his eagerness to report any old garbage.
McK seems much more restrained in comparison.

hah this is dumb if the asking price on these guys is that high
I've been wondering why deals haven't been made, got a log jam going on and probably very little movement

I was actually surprised to see that Talbot is 27 years old and turning 28 on July 5th. At that age, and less than 65 games in the NHL, I don't think I'd want to spend more than a single 2nd round pick on him.
Back when the Flames got Kiprusoff the UFA age was set at 31 although about to change. So you could better justify giving up a 2nd round pick from a 9 round draft on a 27 year old goaltender. Now....that's a lot tougher to do.

Probably a lot more leaks coming out right now with all the GM's together in Vegas. I suspect things will really go full steam ahead after today leading up to the draft.

Some general managers are just really, really dumb when it comes to goaltending.

Why Talbot when you can get Dubnyk for just money.
He wants $5 and term. Not saying I would give it to him, but he is more of a known quantity. Only a year older, way more games played. Was OK on dreadful Oiler teams.
