My take is for a rebuilding team, why not try a few young reclamation projects that may be able to turn things around.

This. I feel that neither Wideman nor Russell will be in our lineup after the 2015 deadline therefore our defensive core is starting to look like a real thing ...

Gio - Brodie
Smid - X
Wotherspoon - Engelland
Kanzig

... assuming we're fortunate enough to land one legit top 4 dman via trade.

We re-signed Russell months ago?

Bad contract, but we had to outbid other teams, and if other teams were offering more term, then the Flames had to push up the dollar figure even more.

Still one year longer than I'd have liked, but at least they've still stayed away from the 5 year deals that have been going around.

$1M AAV salary, $1M AAV to outbid, $900K AAV to buy down the term to 3 years.

Whatever, it's not going to hurt us in the long run and we need size on D.

You can see the exact moment when Burke told Treliving to step aside as he took over the phones.

Brutal, unnecessary contract.

Who cares if it's an overpayment?

This team is going to be so much fun to watch next season. Solid chance we have the highest PIMS in the league next year.

I hope every game becomes that infamous Flames/Ducks game from several years back.

I understand one is RFA and the other UFA, but those things get brought up. At any rate if Eng is worth 2.9 then Brodie is worth 6 if you compare what you get on the ice. And Brodie has earned a huge bump already.
It's not crazy. Your hyperbole, is an emotional over-reaction.

It's irrelevant to compare to Brodie, as I said completely different types of defensemen. You need both types on a good team.

It's a calculated, strategic signing, necessary player in our D Corps, that doesn't have any serious grit, in lieu of a captain we don't want in the box.

Fair enough, couldn't remember if he had signed or not.

So, a Defensive roster of:

Gio-Brodie
Smid-Wideman
Russell-Engelland

Does Wotherspoon become the spare man, flitting between Glen Falls and Calgary, or do you keep him primarily in the former? Still think we are an NHL Dman short.

Can someone explain how or why this contract is going to be bought out when we are almost 20 million below cap this year with little to no huge raises coming up next year, no real reason to believe we will be signing a ton of FA's to huge deals in the next offseason, the cap almost certainly going up the next two years and even questionable that we would be near the cap in year 3 of this deal.

It is 2.9 million dollars for a team that should be nowhere near the cap over the length of the deal. Why would they ever have to buy him out?

Especially when Wideman will be making 5.5 over that same time period.

I really hope our management doesn't believe you can build a team with Engelland making almost $3M AAV.

This is the most concerning part.

Between Englland and Bollig there have been some real dumb comments ignoring guys ability in only focusing on fighting.
What else can Engelland do? 32 year old fighter is more or less what he is. He is a modern day Wade Belak with a ceiling of being a Todd Simpson. These are the type of signings you need though to be in the hunt for McDavid and Day.

Wow, he's already 32.

What are the chances he actually plays out the 3rd year of the contract as a flame?

Oh well..... Disappointing that a 6-7 depth dman on most teams in the league is paid 3 million a year. GMs in this league amaze me.

We're still under the cap floor. This signing is to make us be a top contender in the Connor McDavid Jack Eichel Sweepstakes

Has anyone seen him play? Is he comparable to a Rhett Warner in terms of both character and playing style? Maybe a little faster?
