With the summer winding down I managed to tackle my deck this year despite the frequent downpours and limited working time due to child.

Thought I would share another transformation:

Before:

Rotten interior of old deck:

I managed to rework the area into this:

After:

Vertical Timber (resawn reclaimed fir timber from CP High Level train bridge in Lethbridge) detail:

I also went a bit bonkers and plugged every screw hole - about 1100 of them.

Evening Ambiance!

Couple small details left to complete before the snow flies but that was this summers project!

I hate you, you handy bastard.

It looks brilliant. Which just makes my hate more embittered.

Nice work. Just curious why you plugged the screw holes instead of using the hidden screw technique? I wish I had done that on mine. I'll have to stop by one day.

I didn't really know about that option until I was done!

That said it is consistent with the front Boardwalk I built a couple years back now. Eventually all of it (front and back) will connect.

I'm off full time with my son now so feel free to stop over whenever you want Fuzz!

That was a conscious decision! 45'd corners are so 2014

Haha - if would be cheaper for you to buy the moon than have me do this again. It took me FOREVER to complete this!

Some odds and ends - next majors on the list are outside: the fence and general repair/fixing grading of the lawn.

Inside: living room - wood storage for fireplace - entertainment unit - ceiling treatment. Kind of want to try and portray a grand hotel lobby... We'll see what I can come up with. Might be a while for a budget exists for these projects though!

Wow that old deck was in bad shape. Any idea how old it was or was it not pressure treated wood?

That's a good question - There was an extension put on the house in the eighties - window stamp says 84 - I think the deck would have been built around then maybe so approx 30 years.

The top was all cedar that was left to die in the sun and the joist were double laminated fir I think. So basically the water got Inbetween the joists and rotted them out. It was so bad I probably could have done the demo with a spoon.

The old upper section that no longer exists was a hack and scab job. I had to put in 8" of soil to correct the grade so it wasn't diving straight into a window well for the basement bedroom. (This window well was under the old deck).
