Cory Sarich has a chronic hip problem that significantly reduces his effectiveness and ability to play and was signed to a two year deal this summer with a no-trade clause.

You would have first hand knowledge Puckluck. Didn't you make this last West Coast swing to Anaheim and LA? Good on you man, that had to be a few long nights.
Edit: don't know why I clicked Oil insignia..

Jokinen really isn't a top 6 centre anymore.
Babchuk's NTC ends on trade deadline day, but even if we can't trade him, he'll be gone in the off-season.

That's one of the safer NTC we have handed out, should now be called a "can't trade clause"

Don't blame the messanger. It's Hartley that thinks he's not good enough not me. Hartley didn't even give Horak a look before the season started and after a small handful of games deemed him not ready or good enough. Personally I thought he did okay but not great given that he was playing with two talented guys.

Showing patience in a prospect and letting them know that they don't have to worry about a pit opening up underneath them isn't a bad approach either.
Rumors of scratches, demotion to the fourth line at a time he was playing well, an eventual scratch, and now a demotion. Getting no PP time regardless of play as the veterans are given time to find their game. The GM confusing the issue with his 'the upset special' comments that put even more pressure on him that he should be on the Flames. This with only 10-games played.
If the Flames weren't loaded with veterans and had development of our top prospects as the primary focus would Baertschi be demoted? Is Hartley the right coach for our prospects? If the answer is yes then okay. I am fine with him going down. If the answer is no I am not. We are in 15 overall and he is our only AAA prospect. The focus needs to be on his development.
|
I have been critical of the way they have handled Baertschi too, but you are putting him before the team here and that is just about the worst thing you can do with a 20 year old kid.
Have the Flames handled him well this year? No, not in my opinion. But he'll be fine. I think the fan firestorm is really about a much bigger problem: the reason we are scrutinizing each move, each shift, each linemate that they throw at him is because HE IS THE ONLY PROSPECT THE TEAM HAS.
Baertschi will be fine and I am glad he is out of town because things are only going to get uglier here for the rest of this season.
The Flames need to start focusing on getting some other players for Baertschi to play with (which will also take some of the heat/pressure off of him)

Yep, Baert gets comparisons to guys like Huberdeau or others from his draft class when in reality guys like Huberdeau are a 10 and Sven is a 7.
However, on the Flames, Baertschi is a 7 in a sea of 3s.

Huberdeau is on pace for 35-40 goals in an 82 game season.

Baertschi is far more than a 7. Even HF had him ranked as a top 10 prospect in the league.

In what year(s) do you believe that Iginla and Baertschi can both be key contributors?
I see 2 maybe 3 more years of top-end play from Iginla. And I son't see Baertschi being top-end in the next 2 years.
Not being a hater here, I just think we need more prospects for the future

Being patient with a prospect on the third line for the first 20-games or so isn't putting him ahead of the team. It isn't like he wasn't playing at an NHL level or was a major problem out there.
I don't have a problem with him going down. But I do have a problem with him getting benched in the third despite good play, not getting awarded with PP time on games where he has earned it, finding himself on the fourth line, etc.
It doesn't feel like Baertschi was really put in a position to succeed. In large part because the Flames were desperate to get wins and didn't worry about the impact on our best prospect.
He is down now, and that is probably a good thing. But for an organization that is should be thinking forward they don't seem to have the development of our best (and as you say only) prospect as a very high priority.
