Late to this thread but here are my thoughts..
I had been avoiding the latest Bond movies after a massive let down by the Pierce Brosnan's movies. I don't necessarily think he was a horrible Bond, but the writing was sure bad. Totally butchered a great franchise.
So I decided to watch Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace last weekend and see if this new Bond was any better, and wow was I blown away. I would put Royale in my top 5 Bond movies of all time and Skyfall in the top 3 with Goldfinger and From Russia With Love.
Skyfall is only so good because of the attachment you build for him in the first two, they did a great job of bringing it all together and allowing us to meet the character, something they missed in the last attempt with Brosnan.
Great movie, great 'trilogy', I look forward to more.

I thought Casino Royale was better than Skyfall, but both are amazing movies.
Half the reason the Bond movies are now so much better is because Daniel Craig is such a good actor.

Anyone know what kind of knot Bond used in his ties for this movie?

Windsor apparently
http://www.moviemistakes.com/film7603/questions
Although according to "From Russia with Love" James Bond never trusted a man who boasted a Windsor Knot; "It was tied with a Windsor knot. Bond mistrusted anyone who tied his tie with a Windsor knot. It showed too much vanity. It was often the mark of a cad."

Finally saw it last night. I must say I'm surprised by the general mixed reviews in this thread, I definitely thought it was Craig's best Bond, and I really liked Casino Royale. Skyfall's my favourite Bond movie in a long long time. Loved Javier Bardem as Silva too, my only wish is they developed that character a little further.
In anticipation of this one, I watched Casino Royale again for the first time in awhile, awesome movie but I forgot how much glitz & advertising there was in it, with all the cars/toys (& all previous Bonds, for that matter). I just knew in this post-recession world that Skyfall couldn't be like that, but being Bond, I didn't know how they could smoothly get around it.
But I thought they pulled it off really well, replacing outlandish spening with some solid nostalgia moments, like the old car. Just very impressed with this movie, especially after the abortion that was Quantum of Solace.

I think the bar has just been raised for what a Bond film should look like.

It reminded me of watching a David Fincher movie because I was mesmerized by how beautiful it looked. Every shot felt like it was beautifully framed and the lighting was given a lot of thought and care.
Many of my favourite movies are the ones where you can't take your eyes off the screen. I remember old John Carpenter movies felt like that too.

Maybe I was expecting way, way more. It was worth the $12 dollar movie ticket, but I think they generalized the story a bit too much.

Posts like this in this thread interest me. I don't notice any of this stuff when I'm watching a movie, I just see a good show and I never see the nuances which put a film above it's competition. I do appreciate a well shot film, but I could never verbalize it like this.
Do a bunch of you have film school experience or something? I feel like such a plug sometimes, maybe this is how Penny feels when the geeks are talking about physics.

One scene that really caught my eye as wonderfully shot was the fist fight between Bond and the shooter at the hotel in (Signapore I think). There was the big light behind them and the brawl was silhouetted in front of the broken window. I thought it looked amazing.

That being said, that was when QoS first came out, so I haven't seen it in a long time.

I just watched the 2 films back to back as you suggested and have a whole new appreciation for QoS. You're exactly right that the 2 films are so intertwined, watching them in one sitting or back to back evenings is the way to go.
Thanks for a brilliant suggestion.

One thing I really like about this Bond is that he is human. He is pretty damn slick and obviously good with the ladies, but he is vulnerable. He gets beat up, he gets shot, he loses fights, crap happens to him.
Reminds me of a remake they did to another big franchise that really paid off in spades by bringing a huge element of realism...
It's Batman, in case you didn't guess yet. Batman. Nolan did it.

I absolutely hated casino royale, I thought it was not only a terrible bond movie, i thought it was one of the worst movies in general. Having said that, I thought Skyfall was quit good. It did have some holes in the plot as others have mentioned in this thread, but it made up for it in other ways and had an interesting story and villain. Moneypenny is smoking hot!

I also greatly disliked Casino Royale. Mostly because I'm a poker player, and the poker scenes in it were terribly done.

I really liked casino royale, but agree with you 100% about the poker scene, as a card player myself it just seemed to weaken the characters overall.
