That was covered off. T-dawg mentioned they had been moving in circles all winter, and had picked clean ll the supplies.

My wife is not into the show at all after the second season. Thinks it's junk, didn't want to watch it with me.
"Come on, I know it's cheesy, but this is the first episode of the season, there's going to be some serious ####!"
Sho'nuff (ha!), lots of crazy ####.
She did laugh when they were picking them off in the yard, and she knows next to thing about guns, but I think she's back on board with the show after that first episode.
I know they can't all be like that, but hopefully the show continues to roll at a similar pace.

In that kind of situation though, if you can clear it, it's easily held because of the various choke points.

I think they must also be somewhat immune to what they are seeing. At the begining when they talk abount roads that they cannot pass, they refer to them as "heards", and even give a count in number of heads; like you would cattle.

Still, why not make your way to the coast? You can still fish, no?
I think a hotel along the water where seafood is available would be ideal for a pregnant woman unless transporting her is a problem.

Yeah that's true. There'd be tons of useful choke points in a prison; still, it's creepy as ######; even for them probably, since, some of those bodies were half-eaten, some were fresh, some were decaying, the riot cops were zombies - there's a big story that obviously went on at that prison!

It was inferred that their were two large herds of walkers. It appears they where "trapped" by these two herds. I also, get the feeling they are running on empty.

Oh ok, didn't know that; haven't read the comics and don't remember some of the convos.
Even still, why not go around the herds? Surely you're not surrounded 360 degrees, and surely there's a semi-truck that you can drive and plow over zombies if need be?

I wondered about this myself. This isn't "The Road" - there's nothing "wrong" with the planet other than the fact that it's full of zombies. T-Dog mentioned this in the season 2 finale as they were fleeing the farm, said he was headed for the coast and that they should have done it a long time ago. Only Lori threatening to jump out of the truck made him turn around.
At this point the group is probably so hungry and exhausted that they're not necessarily thinking of long-term sustainability so much as just finding some food and a place to sleep where they don't have to worry about something chewing on them in the middle of the night.

Neither have I. This was from the scene of them all looking at the map on the front of the vehicle.

Well I think they are a decent distance from any coastline.
Somewhere out in the vastness of the internet there is probably a chart of their movements through Georgia, but it appears like they went north from Atlanta.
I think the only efficient way to get to the coast, if that is where you want to go, would be the highway system, which proved to be severely clogged with abandoned vehicles and zombies.
I think in some respects, it's better to get as rural as possible.

There are over 300 million people in the US (not including people visiting), lets say that 80 percent of them are infected. That means there are about 250 million zombies walking around the US. It's quite possible for large herds to be on any side of them, depending on the size you are unlikely to be able to drive through them because you would probably run out of momentum or bodies would get stuck and slow you down.

True, but not clustered enough to prove an inprobable task. There's a very good chunk of dead people as well, and they fact that zombies they are still walking can't really move that fast. There would be very, very few MASS zombie herds if they took a rural route to the ocean. Wouldn't be hard to do, as long as you have a map, enough gas and are able to find rations along the way.
Then again, this is just a show, and I should enjoy it for just what it is; shows like these don't have to be perfect, no matter how much we analyze them.

The prison also said something like "West Georgia Correctional Facility"- so they could also be 100's of miles from the coast.

In the comics it explains how herds are formed. Knowing what I have read from the comics I don't find it hard to believe that most roads around them were blocked with large herds.
They did mention that they could back track and go around the herd but it would take days (or some time) and they had already been that way and gotten all the supplies that were left that way. Doesn't make sense to back track when you are short on supplies, you would likely die before you made it around the herd.

You just have to chalk it up to story telling.
Everyone is a year older, which shows mostly in Carl. The prison is a major setting for the comics and the show. So you explain it by saying they have been living like nomads for the winter looking for a safe haven. Every time they find something a herd comes through driving them out. They end up going in circles, albeit very large ones, none the less circles.
Could be a case of better the devil you know. They know the area, they seem to know where and how the herd moves, making the situation "manageable".
Besides how terrible would the show be if they just headed for the coast and lived happily ever after...

A map of the Walking Dead based on the comics. It's in a spoiler because if you click on the bubbles it tells where major things have taken place for all editions of the comics. So beware...

What a great opener to the season. Carl is a stone cold zombie killer now.
I don't follow the comic series I am curious to find out if this Katana swinging women with her zombie chained pets eventually meets up with the group. And how they will take to her carting Zombies around, even if they are relatives of hers.
