Since we are bashing the NYT editorial section, I thought this was a very thoughtful and balanced op-ed by Michelle Goldberg, who is someone that has been unabashed in her support for the #metoo movement to be punitive in nature. Still a staunch defender of free speech and she also sees the problems of what she calls "the illiberal left".
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/17/o...gtype=Homepage
Wrapping up, she says this:
Quote:
The same is happening today; the president throws tantrums about “cancel culture” while regularly trying to use the power of the state to quash speech he dislikes. Because Trump poisons everything he touches, his movement’s hypocritical embrace of the mantle of free speech threatens to devalue it, turning it into the rhetorical equivalent of “All Lives Matter.”
But to let this occur is to surrender what has historically been a sacred left-wing value. One reason many on the right want to be seen as free speech defenders is that they understand that the power to break taboos can be even more potent than the power to create them. Even sympathetic people will come to resent a left that refuses to make distinctions between deliberate slurs, awkward mistakes and legitimate disagreements. Cowing people is not the same as converting them.

couldn't agree more.

I wasn't. I'm pointing out that it's the latest example of these dorks sticking their heads in the sand and completely ignoring real-world examples of free speech suppression by the State when it doesn't fit their narrative.

Ben Shapiro and Dave Rubin, "intellectuals" from the conservative set. More like two hemorrhoids on the ####### of democracy. It is amazing ANYONE with a functioning brain listens to a word they say, but here we are.

Shapiro at least seems like he has some level of intellect. He's a dishonest ideologue, but I think he's probably a smart enough dude. I'd put Jordan Peterson in that same camp, although I think Peterson is more of a grifter than Shapiro is.
Rubin is a full-blown moron.

Part of the complex of separate individuals working to bring enlightenment to our uneducated masses. Like this cabal: https://bleedingfool.com/blogs/expos...le-comic-pros/
Remember folks it's cultural marxism, where demoralization of the masses by any means necessary is required in order to set up the new utopia.

Oh my! That was absolutely splendid! What a delightful main course, served and prepared perfectly, a wonderful presentation. I couldn't possible eat an... dessert you say?

She rightly called it a rhetorical weapon that people without actual principles use, and surprise, some of the people who do that most often on this board are taking issue with it (oh, hey again Cliff, you keep popping up!).

Rubin is an absolute hack. Trying to be the guy who has seen the light.... oh those evil people on the left
Shapiro has always been the conservative on the right arguing his issues. He's the 21st century Rush Limbaugh.

Since we are talking about dumb NYT articles, here is one.

How are blind auditions unfair? Maybe blacks and Latinos just aren't into classical music?

Vox media conservative resigns!
https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020...xt-friday.html
Quote:
What has happened, I think, is relatively simple: A critical mass of the staff and management at New York Magazine and Vox Media no longer want to associate with me, and, in a time of ever tightening budgets, I’m a luxury item they don’t want to afford. And that’s entirely their prerogative. They seem to believe, and this is increasingly the orthodoxy in mainstream media, that any writer not actively committed to critical theory in questions of race, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity is actively, physically harming co-workers merely by existing in the same virtual space. Actually attacking, and even mocking, critical theory’s ideas and methods, as I have done continually in this space, is therefore out of sync with the values of Vox Media. That, to the best of my understanding, is why I’m out of here.
|
Quote:
. The latest study of Harvard University faculty, for example, finds that only 1.46 percent call themselves conservative. But that’s probably higher than the proportion of journalists who call themselves conservative at the New York Times or CNN or New York Magazine.
|
And here's the sales pitch:
Quote:
Which is why the Weekly Dish, which launches now, is where I’ve landed. The Weekly Dish will be hosted by Substack, a fantastic company that hosts an increasingly impressive number of individual free thinkers,

Man it's just absolutely mind boggling how ####ty people who proudly wear their ####ty opinions on their ####ty chest keep being painted as ####ty.
"Waaaah people criticize meeeee a bloo bloo bloo."
Guess we'll see more people join in on the overcrowded right wing grift-o-sphere.
