- The Flames have an old building

- Other cities have new arena's or are in the process of building them
Therefore, Flames might be moving.

Understandably this will not be popular sentiment on this site, but if the Flames want to move out of Calgary because they can't trick public funds to subsidize private interests, well, all the power to them and I really don't give a ####.
The reality? NHL hockey will return and will be in Calgary because there is a viable business model and community support structure. And yes, somebody will fill the void, and build the damn building. And further, even if I'm wrong and NHL hockey doesn't return? I'm AOK with that. NHL players, teams and the business model in my opinion makes enough money as is. We need to properly prioritize as a society and my vote (again, I know it's likely not popular) is to prioritize other civic improvements.

Yup. I understand there's negotiating, and a process etc. But the majority owner now resides in London and doesn't pay taxes here. If they want to extort a stadium by threatening relocation, call their bluff and keep several hundred million dollars.

His businesses still pay taxes here. His personal income tax never went to the City of Calgary in any case.
It defies all logic, yet it seems that some posters here have decided that Murray Edwards is something between a traitor and the devil for having the criminal audacity to move out of town.

People move all the time. When people move specifically outlining that they're proving a point to not pay taxes, that's fundamentally different

Has that been done? I don't recall Edwards making any specific comment on this.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't London an awesome city to live in if you are loaded?
Again, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Edwards loaded?
If I was a gazillionaire, I'd likely live in a place like London.

I think it's the timing, which highlights the hypocrisy of "I am becoming an expatriate to avoid taxes" and "I'd like hundreds of millions in tax money to help pay for one of my private ventures".

It's positively foolish for anyone to think that the residence of one of the owners of a private company should have any bearing on this discussion, but for the record here's why Edwards moved in his own words:
Canadian energy mogul Murray Edwards explains his move to England

Municipal/Provincial/Federal government pays for cleanup of the site, road re-configuration and upgrade and fieldhouse.
Flames group pays for the remainder.
Can't it be that simple?

Still would require the arena to pay property tax to make sense for the city.

You can't make this statement without evaluating a pro forma for said project. It may well work depending on development densities in the surrounding area.

Maybe. As long as the Flames are willing to wait 15 years or so to meet the City's timeline for cleanup and business revitalization in the location.
