Opinion | The model city for transforming downtowns? It’s in Canada.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opini...lization-plan/
Quote:
Almost every direction one looks in downtown Calgary there’s a crane. The downtown transformation that so many other cities are desperate for is underway in Calgary, a city of 1.4 million in Alberta, which is often dubbed the “Texas of Canada” for its oil and gas industry ties. But today, office towers that once housed energy companies are rapidly being converted into apartments. Calgary offers a road map — and a tool kit — for D.C. and other beleaguered cities on how to make the switch rapidly and efficiently.

Awesome article today in the Washington Post about what's happening to our downtown.

There is significant interest in converting more buildings in Calgary, however, it is incorrect to label HomeSpace as the first Calgary office-to-residential conversion. CUBE was completed in 2019, 7 stories and 65 units.

Gave it a try last weekend. The biscuits were a big hit with the family, also the jalapeno bombs were really good.
The chicken needs to be eaten within a day or two (we picked up a family sized meal) so there was still chicken for a number of days after. The chicken doesn’t do well in the fridge, so for someone who likes a nice piece of cold fried chicken, this wasn’t great. The breading lost a lot of its crispness. The chicken otherwise was good, maybe a little overly salty. Texture and flavour kind of reminded me of Jollibees.

Are the conversions fully paid by developers/building owners or are there some sort of incentives from the city?

There are financial incentives from the city, but not until the project is finished. This way, it puts the development risk on the developer to do it properly to begin with.

The article says incentives of "up to" $75psf for developers and an expedited permitting process.

Some time ago I read a release about Team Town Sports going into Market Mall, and I just assumed it was the old Toys r Us location (the release said 26k sqft. I'm not certain what a comparable size store is for reference)
I noticed today Decathlon went into that space.

The announcement says "across from TD Bank", so it looks like it will be beside the theatre in the old HomeSense location: https://shops.cadillacfairview.com/p...arketmall-2023

Ah yes, I forget about that part of the mall. I barely recall what's there now, a new theatre and.. something.
That release is different than the one I posted some time ago.

There is nothing else right now. It was Staples/Home Sense way back in the day and then it became Saks on 5th Ave but that closed quite a while ago.

You think their prices are too low and it's a shame other firms can't compete? I bought a baseball glove there for my kid this year. It was $35. There isn't a Decathalon in the north yet, so I went to both of the north Sport Chek locations that had the exact same model listed as in stock for $44.99 first before I drove to South Centre. After neither had the stock their website claimed (and one employee suggested I just buy a right hand glove for my kid who throws right) I went to Decathlon where they had the claimed stock and I went through self checkout very quickly.

It looks like Market Mall is getting BOTH a Decathlon (old Toys R Us) and Team Town (old Saks, beside the theatre).
I wonder where's all the demand for cheap sports equipment...

Shrug. My kids seem to want to play every sport and grow 2 sizes per year. Luckily they're always offset (ie one will need size 1/3/5 and the younger guy needs 2/4 a bit later). Cheap and convenient sports equipment seems like a great thing to have multiple choices for to me. It's also something that's better to buy in person, because often fit matters.

That seems extra weird considering there is already a Sport Check and a Sporting Life at Market Mall for the mid/high-ish end stuff.
