Even Knight who was one of the bright spots of camp wasn't a force, more of a steadythin showing except for on his faceoff dominance.
I agree with you about Reinhart, I don't think he did himself anything to secure a roster spot however two more camps for them to turn it up for themselves.

Same thing on CDC... I think it has a lot to do with Gillis saying how they had Horvat targeted from the beginning, and some teams had him ranked #5.

Most discussions about their '13 draft picks involve a discussion on how they stole players from the Flames, and how dumb Feaster is for not drafting Shinkaruk and Fucale.

Not sure how they're related, but whatever makes you feel better about yourself I guess.

TSN ranks the top 50 NHL players leading into each season. 21 C were selected last season. They were (in order)
  1. Crosby (1)
  2. Malkin (2)
  3. Stamkos (1)
  4. Datsyuk (171)
  5. Toews (3)
  6. H Sedin (3)
  7. Kopitar (11)
  8. Tavares (1)
  9. E Staal (2)
  10. Spezza (2)
  11. Seguin (2)
  12. Backstrom (4)
  13. Getzlaf (19)
  14. Bergeron (45)
  15. Benn (129)
  16. Thorton (1)
  17. Couture (9)
  18. B Richards (64)
  19. M Richards (24)
  20. J Staal (2)
  21. Nugent-Hopkins (1)
A few facts from that list:
  • 8 of the top 10 were drafted in the top 3
  • There were only two drafts where more then two of these players were drafted. 2003 (deepest draft in modern history) and 2006 (all three players were drafted top 4).
  • The average number of these players drafted each draft is 1.4
  • Every cup winner since the 2005 lockout had at least 1 C in the top 15 of that list.

I am getting heat for suggesting that Monahan could be a J Staal / M Richards / Couture level player yet they are all players on the list. Apparently (according to some) he should be projected to be at the top end of that list. I am getting heat for not having Jankowski projected to be on that list.

Monahan may end up being a top line C on a cup contending caliber team. But chances are he caps out as a second line C on a cup contending caliber team. There is nothing wrong with that. That isn't projecting him to be a failure. That isn't a ceiling (or a floor). It isn't an unreasonable projection.

That said I have updated my 2013 Flames Roster with a more detailed projection.

People need to be less sensitive.

I think Horvat can be a useful player in the NHL but lets not sugarcoat the fact that we are talking about a guy that put up a career high 61 points in 67 games last year on a team full of talent. Those are very pedestrian junior stats and while he's an all around player it's a stretch to think he's going to be a perennial 75 point player in the NHL. Monahan on the other hand has multiple 80+ point seasons on a bad team without much of a supporting cast. Pretty obvious which player has the higher ceiling and there were exactly zero scouting reports that had Horvat ranked higher than Monahan. Zero.

Hanowski's game isn't really about controlling the puck so it's not a fair comparison to emphasize that. He's more about using his body to retrieve pucks or to get in front of the net when needed. Lots of useful players don't show particularly well in skill-heavy sessions like development camp. Hanowski seems to be working hard at improving as his skating noticeably improved in a relatively short time coming into development camp and he lost a good bit of weight. I do think he'll land in the AHL this season. However, if he keeps working hard and improving he can be a full-time NHL'er soon enough.

I don't know where he'll end up but i like the fact that he played some NHL games, identified an area to improve (quickness) and did something about it. Drive and self-improvement can take you a long way....

OK... this might be my worst twitter source ever but, apparently Josh Jooris' teenage cousin just congratulated Jooris for signing with the Calgary Flames.

Take it for what it is worth.

Yeah, he posted the same thing over at HF.
He was the best invite at camp in my opinion, so I would be more than happy if this turns out to be true.

Good size, skating ability, and most importantly vision. His greatest attribute is without a doubt his playmaking.
I wonder if it is an NHL deal or just an amateur contract.

I am hoping for an AHL deal, but if Jooris is leaving his final year of college to play pro hockey, he may have been enticed by an ELC (i.e. NHL contract with signing bonus).

Jooris and Trey Lewis were the 2 invites I was hoping we'd sign to AHL deals at least.

This was Jooris' 3rd NHL evaluation camp. He attended the Canucks camp last summer and the Bruins camp the year prior. He seemed to use that prior experience to his advantage this year in Calgary.

I thought he had committed to finishing out his senior year at Union College, but we shall see...

Love to see Lewis get an AHL deal and come up the way Gio did. I mean that in the signed undrafted kind of way.

Didn't that Penner fellow have a good showing at camp as well. IIRC, didn't he even score a couple of goals in the last scrimmage?

I wonder if we'll see Penner on the Heat at some point.

I thought Jooris looked really good at the Monday camp scrimmage. It would interesting to see how he performs if he goes to Penticton.

I would prefer an AHL deal as well. But the Flames are currently at 43 contracts. Add Brodie and Monahan and remove Kipper and you are at 44. Chances are the Flames will use 4 contracts or so to attract players to the Heat.

I wouldn't be surprised a year or two from now but he's only 18 right now and think he'll fit better in junior somewhere this season. On one hand he looked like one of the worst guys in the skill sessions, but on the other hand he's got good size and he's only 18 and undrafted so it's somewhat to be expected. Not to take away from how he stepped up in the scrimmages completely, but one goal was set up really nicely for him and one was a bang-in. He had less than a ppg in the AJHL this past year. Given his age and bigger frame to grow into he could improve a lot in the next year or two so it's probably good the Flames got him in and got to know him a bit.

Jooris is a good offensive player in the same manner that Krys Kolanos and Ben Street are good offensive players. He will be a leading scorer in the AHL for sure. He would have to take a big step forward to be a scorer at the NHL level. It's not impossible, but with the amount of guys he'd have to leapfrog, it might not be possible. The rest of his game is not suited for a bottom 6 role.

Yeah I see ahl-er written all over him. He'd need to take some huge steps in his development to make the show any time soon.

Prediction: Feaster will make his trademark statement that Jooris is expected to be competing for a spot in the flames top 6 at training camp.
