Let me clarify a bit. My “one extreme to the other” comment was speaking more to global trends swinging from left/progressive governments to right/populist ones (see political sentiment in in Argentina, Italy, France, Germany etc), not necessarily speaking to parties/policies within Canada. Extreme was perhaps too harsh a word, but I do think we’re undergoing a swing from one end of the political spectrum to another at the moment, and right or wrong, Trudeau/Canada was seen as the poster child of the global progressive movement. That movement is now being reacted to from the opposite end.
Having said that, there were a few policies of the Liberals I did personally find to be somewhat out there (dare I say extreme!). I found their 500K/year immigration ramp up compared to prior trends to be way too aggressive, especially in light of our housing troubles. Considering our natural resource wealth and position in the world, I found their environment policy (and minister) to be out of touch and potentially very detrimental to quality of life in Canada. I think the freezing of protester bank accounts (despite not being a fan of them) was complete political overreach, something that has had a detrimental effect on the optics of Canada as a stable place to invest. Personally, I also find any legislation around “hate speech” or “misinformation” to be extremely Orwelian, and not something I trust any government to regulate, regardless of party affiliation.
Did these issue turn the Liberals into literally Hitler (or perhaps more appropriately Stalin)? Of course not, but for me those things mattered. Fiscally, I wasn’t particularly impressed, but then again it’s hard to find any government who is particularly prudent these days. I don’t expect the Conservatives to be much better…they’ll probably be spending just as much money on other things.
Like for the majority of Canadians, my vote tends to come down to voting Cons vs Liberals (there was one time in college where I threw my vote away on the Greens, but let’s not talk about that). I don’t think there is a massive chasm between them. My biggest beef with the Liberals is still the never ending stream of corruption, incompetence and hubris… that at some point just needs to stop being rewarded. Will the Conservatives be better? Yes, no, maybe so? I have no idea. I wear the jersey of no party, and am under no illusion that any politician or party is some sort of saviour. The Cons may be just as incompetent and corrupt (or worse) as the Liberals. But the incumbent has had a proven track record, so it’s time to give someone else a shot. I will probably be saying the same thing in 4-8 years.
The Liberals were, indeed extreme. No need to apologize for that take. I'm any other political context the Conservatives are centre left.
The liberal party under Trudeau basically stole the NDP playbook.
Not that anyone in this thread cares, but there's probably a bunch of very pissed off people who potentially sold assets last spring in advance of the potential changes.

I think it will be more John Turner 84 than Kim Campbell 93. Largely because the BQ and reform paties essentially joined the fray and provided additional outlets for angry Conservatives to put a vote.
The key will be if the Liberals permit the next leader to have time from 2025 to 2029 to prep for that election.
That said in today's world...after a 5 year period of right wing populism in Western Democrcies which is happening now. It could swing just as hard the other way by that point in time.
Better choice for sure, and for the reasons you mention. I see Libs winning closer to 40 seats than 2.

The prudent businessman will just see it as a sign to switch to a new/opposite audience. In our world, there's always someone to hate, and a way to make money off of it.
Hey I am happy today, maybe now I won't have to explain why some ignoramus has f bombs on their bumper stickers to my small kids every time I go back home to visit family. Please all the gods let the other side not do the same dumb thing with the other guys leader if he comes in and just let the whole thing simmer down a bit. Feels like politics in North America are being taken over by the loudest crazy uncle types lately and all the more moderate middle of the road people are just keeping their distance while it gets more and more extreme

Jagmeet has enough technicalities to stickhandle around his own words into supporting the liberals again so that any election won't be until October. Nothing has really changed, maybe just the coat of paint on the liberal party.

The other policy that was canceled was about extending the deadline for charitable donations to the end of February for 2024 taxes. This was a measure to help charities out with the postal strike and I think it could’ve made a significant benefit for those charities.
