Back to adding to our top 6, I think we've done pretty good with Lindholm, Ryan and Czarnik.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Bennett - Jankowski - Czarnik
Lazar - Ryan - Brouwer
If we can add Maroon on a 2 year deal or Neal on a 3 year deal, shoot. This team is gonna be tough to handle.

It's not whether we think there's any more moves to make but Treliving seems bent on totally re-shaping this roster.
I still think they're landing one of Maroon or Neal.

it would take a lot to get him, even if he wanted out. 2019 1st for sure, one of Bennett or Janko, one of Kylington/Andersson/Valimaki, and probably throw Frolik in there too. It would cost a lot but the only piece I'd be hesitant to deal from that list is Valimaki but I wouldn't let him hold up the deal. I think Stone is the exact kind of player this team needs.

I really hope it's Neal, that would totally bump Bennett and Jankowski down to the 4th line, which would be scary for other teams to handle.

Still holding out hope that the Flames are still 'kicking tires' on Neal as Dreger said we were. That guy has pretty nice hands, and can for sure snipe the puck. We need that. Just hope he comes down from the 6 year term, I guess.

Banking on Czarnik to help Bennett and Jankowski take the next step isn't a risk Tree should be willing to take this coming season, and that 4th line is one good player, an unproven 13th forward and a complete dumpster fire in Brouwer. Those aren't 4 lines you can roll and hope to go toe to toe with San Jose or Vegas.
Right now, I still see it as:
Gaudreau - Monahan - Tkachuk
Bennett - Lindholm - ?????
????? - Backlund - Frolik
Jankowski - Ryan - Czarnik
Brouwer, Lazar
I believe that's a solid basis for being able to roll 4 effective lines - and that has to be the goal. Bennett/Lindholm and Jankowski/Ryan can do strong-side faceoff deploys with Bennett/Jankowski taking the left side draws while Lindholm and Ryan take the right side draws. Backlund and Monahan are your solid 1st and 3rd line centres. Tkachuk being added to the first line gives that line a Marchand-Bergeron-Pastrnak look.

^Yeah. If we add that top 6 guy to push Backlund and Frolik down to the 3rd line, we'd be in good shape. I don't think a guy like Frolik has a spot on the 2nd line on a playoff team, or at least a team in the top half.

I like the idea of putting a young guy on the LW of Backlund Frolik. Whether it's Foo, Dube, Jankowski, Bennett etc.
I think it puts the young guys in a position to succeed. Two responsible good skating veterans to learn from and protect from the inevitable errors.

Kulak holds such minimal trade value. Every team has their own "Kulak" or reasonable facsimile. He was exposed to Vegas and they chose to take Engelland when he was UFA.

I'm glad you like this, and it's not terrible. But this is very close to last year.
The Dougie/Ferly for Hanifin/Lindholm deal is a wash or at least very close to.
The Czarnik upgrade for Jagr/Hath/Lazar is minor depending on how he plays there.
Ryan is better than Stajan, but improving your 4C is really not going to change that much.
Adding Neal/JVR or something on the top line is where you change the rest of the team for the better by the trickle down effect. Swapping out parts isn't going to make a big impact.

I think adding Neal or a similar bonafide scorer saves the off season.
Right now I think that they stood still; coaching is a wash, and the trade from an offense standpoint is a step back (Ferland and Lindholm had similar seasons, and Noah is lower than Dougie).

I think the offense is better, if only a little. Lindholm I believe goes to a higher level next year, especially playing with Mony and Gaudreau, while I think Ferland regresses.
and Hanifin, I guess we'll see, probably around the same production this past season. Woulnd't surprise me to see him take another step playing with a solid partner like Hamonic and another year of experience.
Ryan I like better for offense than Stajan as well.
Czarnik with potential for a breakout.
But adding a scoring touch like Neal would be huge for this group for reasons mentioned^.

The Flames are not moving Jankowski to the wing. Not for Derek Ryan. Christ almighty, who would be stupid enough to do that?

If the talk of Neal wanting six years is true I'd want no part of him here. That has albatross written all over it for a player already on the wrong side of 30.

I see it much differently
I think overall the Flames are a better team with Hanifin and Lindholm than Dougie and Ferland
Ryan is not a fourth line centre. He wasn’t signed just to be that.
And Austin could be a significant upgrade
I think the Flames have a much better two way forward group with way more options
They haven’t just swapped out parts. They’ve been arguably the most active and aggressive team and have improved

A big part of me wants us to go all in for Panarin. With Johnson leaving the need for a depth D could help and the flames have an interesting set of players that could get them to consider. Seeing what ROR cost would you do a trade like this for Panarin?
Jankowski + Stone + Frolik + 19 1st + 21 2nd for Panarin
Bury Brouwer
Sign Maroon
Gaudreau - Monahan - Maroon
Tkachuk - Lindholm - Panarin
Bennett - Backlund - Czarnik
Mangiapane - Ryan - Foo
Giordano - Brodie
Hanifin - Hamonic
Kulak - Andersson
Prout
Smith
Rittich/Gillies

How can anyone say the Flames have stood still? They’ve made more changes than the vast majority of teams

That was squashed a few days ago here

Panarin informed the Blue Jackets last week he wasn’t interested in negotiating a long-term deal with the club at this time. A media report surfaced over the weekend that Panarin would be open to signing in Los Angeles, New York or Florida, but Panarin's agent, Daniel Milstein, told The Athletic his client has made no such list.
|
But - it sure as heck sounds like he wants to go to free agency next year.

The upside and potential makes me excited for the upcoming season. Changes to the core and bottom 6 should make us a better team overall.
