Wouldn't that just be a simple case of exposure? Get more involved with the community and become even more of a known name? That's the likeliest answer here...

Slava, if you want to grow your profile, I suggest you continue posting on Calgary Puck and always agree with / support popular opinion on here.

No controversial posts, because your opponents will be watching you.

But in all seriousness here are a few suggestions I think would be beneficial:
- Volunteer or seek Board positions in your Community Association
- If you have kids that are involved in sports, get actively involved in the Organizations
- Volunteer and get active in your constituency on a Provincial or Federal Level
- Start a Blog that provides commentary / criticism of civic issues and politics

If you are articulate, friendly, good at building allies, have a good track record of being a good citizen then that is a bonus too.

Chris himself tweeted that just because you're not on Council doesn't mean you can't make an impact in the community.

By continuing to participate in and lead boards, associations, community groups, advocating for community issues to Council, the media and to the people, and taking the time to get the community to know who you are, I believe these are some of the ways one can raise their profile.

Chris pretty much started campaigning after the 2010 election. I believe he is well on his way to becoming a leader in this city with his ambition and knowledge of city/Ward 1 issues.

Right, assuming nothing else goes up in price

If Chris can do this without an official title and on his own dime 4 years before the election, I think he deserves to win next time.

Civic election is all about name recognition. I remember I saw Magliocca and Chu's name way before the election. I can't recall the place but I just know their names for one reason or another and they both won.

Get photographed leaving strip clubs. Punch out a couple of reporters, smoke some crack.

Let's put in our own CP slate to control city council and advance the platform of CP.

Magliocca had his "ward2.ca" bus stop ads up for more than a year before the election.

I can't remember if I posted this in here already or not, but 3 of my relatives live in Ward 1 and voted Sutherland because "Harper was endorsed by the builders.. I didn't want any of those guys in".

If Harper truly had nothing to do with getting that endorsement, that really sucks, because I'm sure they aren't the only ones that were swayed by that, and he likely would have won.

He immediately distanced himself from the endorsement on Twitter, so I can only assume that it was unsolicited and unwanted. I personally felt at the time that such an endorsement would be detrimental, and I think that it is conceivable that 87 people in the ward may have avoided him on principle.

I am quite certain that there was no developer-backed, slate candidate in Ward 1. The perception that Harper was the developers' "chosen one" probably cost him more votes than it gained him. Enough to change the result? I think so, yes.

Had Harper fully disclosed his backers prior to the election? At least then an educated voter could have taken a look and seen. Not that the people who were swayed by the builders slate boogyman are really educated voters.

The lesson in Ward 1 (and also in Ward 8), seems to be that if you don't define yourself, you will be defined by someone else.

That could be true. Just saying it could be a lot worse.

Sounds like something is being done about the Evan Woolley campaign sidewalk graffiti

Quote:
Bylaw services confirmed Thursday they have ordered Evan Woolley’s campaign to remove spray-chalked messages supporting the candidate in at least 11 city-owned locations. But Robert Schuett, manager of the Woolley campaign, said there were actually up to 200 messages spread around Ward 8 by his team on election day. Schuett’s candidate pulled off what many considered the upset of the election, knocking off area incumbent John Mar.

Schuett said he doesn’t see what all the fuss is about.

“It’s sidewalk chalk,” he said. “I don’t know many children playing in the suburbs that call bylaw before they play write and play hop-scotch on the street.”

Images of the pro-Woolley logos have emerged on social media and some criticism has been levelled at the new Ward 8 representative on Twitter and his Facebook page.

“Want to clean up the Beltline? Start with your own mess, mister,” wrote Alethea Wiesner.
But Schuett said the criticism was a “social media attack” by hypocrites, adding his team found similar messages supporting Mar and Mayor Naheed Nenshi.

He had received a quote for the cleanup from a professional company, but deemed it too steep for the campaign’s budget.Instead, Schuett said volunteers were going “full gear” to remove the messages and at least 75 per cent had been removed by Thursday afternoon.

Animal and bylaw services manager Kevin Leitch said the campaign has until week’s end to remove the messages, but even then fines could be handed out.
“We treat it as graffiti,” Leitch said. “We own the property . . . we can order that it be cleaned up very quickly.”

Calgary Transit staff also removed some of the Woolley spray-chalk from its own property, a representative confirmed in a statement Thursday. A bill for the cleanup job will be sent to campaign representatives.

Sounds like bitter John Mar supporters.

Also, I think we should fine kids for sidewalk graffiti too. I want Bylaw Services to serve citations to anyone minor caught drawing a stick figure and a sun.

The funny thing is some of the people bitching about this on twitter are the same types of folks that would take an instagram picture of spray painted/chalk "art" on a sidewalk or wall and gush about it.

Bringing out the pressure washers and bylaw threats seems a bit excessive when it is supposed to rain heavily on Sunday anyway. Surely a little glance at the weather forecast would save everyone involved a lot of time, energy, and hot air.

Certainly not condoning graffiti, but come on. Chalk. Rain coming. Some things just sort themselves out.
