I mean, they've kind of already done that by waiting until the 11th hour to realize an 81 year old in cognitive decline isn't the best candidate. But none of the Democratic options are clearly above the others, so going with the current VP and maintaining the existing campaign and fundraising apparatus is probably the best of a bunch of mediocre options.
And down ballot Democrats are still polling OK, so even if replacing Biden doesn't help win the Presidency, it might help stop the bleeding from affecting Senate and House races.

It's the 11th hour in terms of being able to have any kind of primary or anything. But really, 4 months is still a very long time to campaign. Canada could hold 3-4 election campaigns in that period.
A lot of people won’t jump and sabotage their chances in 2028.
It’s going to be Harris.
Biden really ####ed this up.
If that's true then it's stupidly short sighted. With the presidency, senate, house, and supreme court in MAGA hands there's a significant chance that there won't BE another election in 2028

Yeah, it sucks but it's always a consideration. Just like parties tend to not want to burn one of their top political prospects running against an incumbent and prefer to wait until there is a fresh start. It's just so expensive and sometimes career damaging if you lose, that most only have one-shot of doing it these days and they don't want to waste that shot when they know they are already starting from behind. It's why a lot of "young" candidates don't run. So much dirt comes out during a campaign that many never recover after losing, whether that dirt is factual or not. The character assassinations can affect any future elections that they want to participate in.
While Trump isn't the incumbent, he has some of the same advantages being a former president with an established core and network similar to what an incumbent would have.

Very insightful interview from a former DOJ staffer who worked there during Trump's presidency.
The most chilling part was when she talked about members of congress voting along with Trump purely out of fear for the well being of themselves and their families.
Democracy literally CAN NOT WORK if representatives are directly intimidated from doing their jobs. USA is completely f'ed if Trump gets back in.

That risk is clearly over stated.
Will there be as fair of an election? Will there be more exclusionary ID policies allowed to exist put forth by states? Probably. However suggesting there won’t be an election is rather alarmist.

The generic Democrat is +1 right now vs Biden at -3. In 2020 on election day both were +6-7. So Biden is significantly more unpopular than the party. Just getting back to neutral boosts the Dems chances.

Even Russia still has elections.
Is it really worth splitting hairs? What’s the difference between having no elections and having a fake election?
