Don't particularly like Francis. He's abrasive, arrogant and his Sportsnet suits make him look like a total knob, but anyone denying he has legitimate sources and insider information is being foolish.
A blind squirrel doesn't know the Flames are about to announce the Monahan deal, the biggest deal in Flames history at this point, the night before it happens. That's not luck.

Not doubting that he has some limited sources, but he's been way off recently too but insists on writing attention grabbing stories and not admitting wrong. His "credibility" is not built on solid footing and his personality and scattershot stories undermine when he's right.
He's a hack because he has to sensationalize. Guys like Friedman, Duhatschek and McKenzie don't.

"Peaceful coexistence" is the general state of affairs between players and media, FWIW. Everyone has a job to do.

Missing games doesn't help anyone. From a strictly dollars angle, if he misses half a season (for example), he could be passing up somewhere between three and four million dollars. Will he make that up by turning the screws properly and getting what he's after? Maybe. He won't get it back if he ends up signing for something close to what the Flames are offering him today.
He seems like a level-headed guy and not the type to buy a Lamborghini with an interior made from the skin of a Blue Whale's penis, and I'm sure he's able to pay the bills even if he sits, but it's going to cost him something.
Point is, both sides are on the hook to lose on this. And so are we, as fans. Goddamn I wish they'd sort this out.

Don't disagree, but lets not forget this off season was when Hartley was fired and he said Bruce Boudreau would be the next head coach of the Calgary Flames.

Totally agree. I thought it was also him that ferreted out Johhny's ask of 8mm plus too. Lewis Gross was upset about them looking greedy with the ask but he did nothing to refute.

Not to nitpick but he can't miss half the season. I believe its a Dec 3rd deadline for not being able to play the entire season if not signed by then. So roughly 1/3rd season

If the team is at risk of missing the playoffs because one player is out, then we have either a non-playoff team anyway, or a one dimensional team that will be easy for a top team to beat. This goes for losing Gio, Brodie or anyone else.
Johnny has no leverage, every million he loses while not playing is money flushed down the toilet and that could have been invested. I hope management do not cave and, even if we lose the season because of it, hold to the salary structure they seek. The long term success of the team depends on it. My expectation now is that we start the season without him, and I am ok with it. Other players will get a chance to see what they can do on the top line.

The threat of him sitting 10 games could sink chances at a playoff berth pretty quickly, which would end up being enormously expensive to the team.

All that matters from an ownership perspective is making the playoffs. Missing them is very expensive, like 3-5% loss of revenues for a team at the very least.
Having Johnny play the whole season gives the best chance for making the playoffs and earning valuable cash for owners and experience for young players.
That's why this is such a tough negotiation, because Johnny actually holds significant leverage compared to most 10.2 (C) players, or RFAs in general. Withholding his services for a material amount of games could cost the team millions of dollars.

Had an idea!
|
I'm not sure how much influence an agent has, but one has to think his isn't doing a very good job.
There is no way any team in the NHL would give Johnny more than $7 million no matter how good he was at this point in his career. Much less when the team has so much leverage. Gotta think going into negotiations thinking it would actually happen created this whole mess.

That's a pretty stiff accusation.
Just because things don't always comes true doesn't mean that what is reported doesn't have something behind it.
If he really did "make things up" he probably wouldn't have lasted as long as he has. He is generally a respected member of the media by his peers.

Huh?
Missing the playoffs doesn't cost the team a dime. All salaries are already paid.
It would limit further revenue than the regular season and all that provides, but it doesn't cost anything.
