My argument is Coleman takes up valuable cap space and a roster spot where we can roll the dice on emerging players to see how they look above the AHL for longer than a few games. Players like Heineman. For Coleman I view his leadership and mentorship as redundant, and there are other ways to reach the cap floor.

So your argument is that the Flames shouldn’t have traded for Toffoli or signed Coleman to keep a spot open for Heineman?

I'm getting more of a vibe that the argument is, ‘The Flames did this, therefore I'm against it because they're always wrong.’

At the time the Flames traded for Toffoli it was justified. They had a good look at it that year. Not mad about this trade at all, good luck to all involved.

Look, Heineman is having a decent season for the Habs. But he's not a difference maker. He's shooting higher than is likely. Is he an NHler? No doubt. is he replaceable? Of course.

Just goes to show that keeping prospects is a good idea because nobody really has any idea how they will pan out.

Sure but you can't keep all of them because of roster and contract limits.
So you have to project which ones you think are going to turn into something, and if you get more value by using the as a trade chip.
In the case of this prospect, there was also some buzz that perhaps he wasn't happy being traded and wouldn't sign. Could be true or not.
But you can't keep them all.

Fair enough, but Heineman has been getting praise all season, not just during the recent hot streak. Fact is he has been one of the best rookies in the league and he looks like he will be an elite 3rd liner with potential to play in the top 6 (similar to Pospisil). We would be happy to have him in CGY!
You have to give to get though. The price was fair for a top line winger on a sweetheart contract for 2+ seasons.

I remember the exact same thing happening with Paul Byron. He was also not a huge loss, and Montreal ended up overpaying him because of that hot streak.
|
Didn't we waive Byron in order to keep 3 AHL-calibre goalies on the Flames? Overall, a bad transaction

The Flames play a "defensively irresponsible system"?

Meh, was worth it just to get rid of the breakaway blueballs.

That part is critical. It's a lot easier to go on a hot streak if you don't have to worry about defence.
When players have hot streaks under Huska, they are doing it without that advantage.

A bit off-topic but I still think waiving Byron was a big reason the 15-16 team couldn't really find the magic the 14-15 team had.
When you have a guy as small as Byron that isn't afraid to fly into a corner or get mixed up with bigger guys on the other team that type of energy radiates through the lineup and means nobody else has any excuses to not play that way.
Similar to a guy like Lomberg but he was probably actually a better hockey player too.
