Considering that they have already moved out salary, plus the fact that Karlsson is their biggest ticket, I would think there wasn't that much need to move Ryan's contract.
Why not go for a better return? They are going to have a minimal payroll anyway.

Agreed. They really need to get as big a return as possible for Karlsson to set themselves up for the future. Surely the GM could try to convince the owner that there's a bigger picture than simply unloading a bad contract.

Might see a blockbuster today:
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Action picking up on Erik Karlsson trade talks in OTT. Some with teams prepared to take Bobby Ryan but some with teams not taking Ryan.

Might piss off some fans, but Martin might be someone the Flames look at to bring some physicality into their bottom 6.
Was rumored the Flames were interested in signing him 2 years ago. Has 2 years left with a cap hit of $2.5 mil
Chris Johnston

Matt Martin receives a $1.5M signing bonus today -- leaving just $2.5M in actual money due over the final two years on his deal. The #leafs have let other teams know he's available via trade.

some RoR rumblings:
Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Was just emailing with a source from league head office on this. Sabres got clarification from the NHL that while ROR bonus was payable today, they've got until midnight tonight to play with as far as another team paying that bonus if they're able to trade him today...
Pierre LeBrun
@PierreVLeBrun
The Blues are still interested in ROR; to some degree the Habs as well among other teams. The Sabres' believed ask of a 1st, 2nd and top prospect or young player still too rich for some ... Teams don't think ROR will be dealt once bonus is paid by Sabres
Frank Seravalli @frank_seravalli
Who really knows what happens with O’Reilly, but some thought that #Sabres mentioned to free agents on pitches to not plan on ROR being around next season. We’ll see.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Until we actually see a real, live offer sheet on an RFA, I’m of the view they are virtually non-existent. That said, there has been considerably more talk amongst some teams lately of putting in an offer sheet. We’ll see about that but RFAs are now eligible to receive/sign them.

With the Islanders losing Tavares, wonder if they will enter the Karlsson or ROR sweepstakes. Pretty sure they could put together a nice package to get both of those players

What happens with the 7.5 signing bonus for ROR if he get traded...does it go to the team that acquires him?

Yes, which is why BUF has apparently informed other teams that if they have to pay the bonus the trade cost goes up.

Depending on the acquisition cost I think that's someone the Flames should really be looking at to play solid limited minutes.

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Flames need to move a body or two if they want to take on ROR. That would put them right near the cap ceiling. Not so much if they target Maroon. Have to know internally what they'll be upping Lindholm & Hanifin for also.
The Flames would need to make big changes to fit both Karlsson & Ryan under the cap too. That one isn't likely to happen here.
