If this is true, I like it.

Well, let's take a look at what teams need goalie. Oh look, 4 or 5 perennial cup contenders.

Bye Marky.

Koekkoek - 10th
Vasilevskiy - 19th
Drouin - 3rd
DeAngelo - 19th
Howden - 27th
Foote - 14th

That's not great.
Namestikov, DeAngelo and Howden turned into JT Miller and Ryan MacDonough

Drouin turned into Sergachev

That's pretty damn good from where I sit.

Thanks for playing well and upping your trade value Marky - see ya later.

Let's look at who needs a goalie and has a contention window for this season and 2 more seasons.

New Jersey
Toronto
Carolina
Edmonton
Detroit (borderline)

And maybe Colorado and Los Angeles too although it's not really an issue for them this year.

This generally was his strength in Tampa Bay TBH.

Knowing when to make a trade...but the drafting itself wasn't great...he just knew when to move on from a prospect when they still had value.

The Kings have been scouting the Flames prior. They might be a bubble team in the mix for Marky but L.A has its own appeals.

Makes sense for Markstrom. Gives him a chance to win and play in front of a strong team which could help his next contract.

If Conroy can move Markstrom without retaining salary, he'll immediately become the greatest GM in in our history.

Great to hear. There are a few really good teams that need better goaltending. New Jersey and Colorado come to mind. Might be tough to make the salary work especially for Colorado. Although, if I was Sakic, I might be hesitant to trade for a goalie that has so much trouble against the oilers… there’s a chance they could face them in the playoffs.

If it was Colorado, the flames would have to retain and they would have to take a contract back to make it work. Maybe something like this:

To Colorado:

Lindholm (50% retained)
Markstrom (50% retained)

To Calgary:

Johansen (salary dump)
2024 1st round pick (lottery protected)
2025 1st round pick (lottery protected)
Calum Ritchie

A steep price for Colorado but the flames would be taking on $4 million AAV in Johansen’s contract next year and retaining over $5.4 million this year (Lindholm + Markstrom) and $3 million AAV for the next two seasons after this one.

Moving Markstrom would be such a huge win. He's great, but being able to gather assets for him, clear cap, AND make room for Wolf? Would be a great unexpected currency boost for the franchise

Better to wait a while longer and see if luck can make him smarter.
The Wings have been out of the playoffs since 2017, but they didn’t start rebuilding until 2019. Like a lot of teams, they were dragged kicking and screaming into a rebuild, and so were a bad team for years before they bit the bullet.

The contending teams that could use him will generally need retention.

Everyone talks about short rebuilds

But the moment real examples are brought up, it's nothing but excuses

Or a bad contract back. Which might be more doable if it's a short term.

Toronto and New Jersey have Vanecke and Samsonov as goalies making $3.4M+ - so that's likely the starting point in terms of the contract you have to take back.

This is a scenario where maybe 50% retention isn't the ask (and don't think Flames would want to eat $3M for two more seasons), but I could see 25% being the ask to drop him to around $4.5M with the Flames retaining $1.5M...if a team was going to pay a premium.

If we get into a situation where we’re trading Tanev, Lindholm, and Markstrom

…I’d be fine with extending Hanifin.

People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Ottawa has been to the Conference final in 2017, the Flames in 2004. I would much rather be Ottawa right now than Calgary, especially when you consider the age of their core.

Ottawa's bad run, of 6 playoff misses, has more to do with bad trades than their drafting. They lost DeBrincat for significantly less than they traded him for him. Chychrun is similar to their other 2 LD in Chabot, and Sanderson, that's why they'll likely lose assets as a result of trading Chychrun soon.

They lost a guy like Duclair for nothing because they didn't qualify him. They lost more assets in the Duchene trades (the 1st they traded turned into Byram). They lost a lot of assets in an attempt to compete again and become relevant more quickly, sounds familiar? That's exactly what most Flames fans want to avoid.

Vanacek is just one more season and the Flames aren't gonna need the cap next year. If it increases the return I take him as the biggest cap dump.

But NJ doesn't a lot of attractive assets.

Taking back a bad contract is more likely because it does not affect the number of cap retention spots available. You want to maximize those cap retention opportunities trading away pending UFAs with a relatively high cap hit like Lindholm, Tanev, and Hanifin, which means that you will still have all of the cap retention spots available next season.
