Has anyone used the www.groupon.com before for coupons. Is it legit?

I just find it odd you purchase the coupon from a 3rd party and not the actual retailer.

The retailer pays Groupon in this case to advertise, provide the coupon and handle the transaction.
I remember reading an article (trying to find the link) that had a store offering $20 worth of goods for $10, but had to pay Groupon $5 for each coupon.
To be honest, I'm not sure why some retailers would want to do it. They would need a large number of either no-shows or repeat customers. Obviously if your business wanted a lot of exposure, that would be the way to go.

Thanks, I was specifically wondering about the MVP coupon. I already go there, I just find it odd I could save 50% just by buying the coupon - not that I am complaining.

Totally legit. Unofficially, Groupon got to $500 mil revenues faster than any company in history. Their growth is amazing.
That said it will peak fast I think. They take 50% across the board and buying business that way is expensive. Renewal rates are low. Enjoy the deals while they last.

Indeed. For a business to give 50% off, and then pay groupon 50% of what they get, they're giving a 75% discount to attract new customers.

I think Groupon is brilliant. The retailer can always cap the deal, so they basically spend what they want. It's a very targeted form of marketing/advertising - the only money the company spends is on people actually interested enough to try their products.
Look at television advertising - the costs are probably astronomical in comparison and unaffordable to a lot of businesses. Plus you're essentially spending money on a bunch of people that will never actually use your product. With Groupon, everybody who buys one will use your product - and if they buy and never show up, you just got paid for nothing!

There is a new website that is up right now and will start launching products on December 1st.
www.swarmjam.com it is owned and operated by the Calgary Herald simular idea to groupon only some vendors are going to be able to offer multilevel saving. ie if 100 people buy a ticket to an event then it's $15 if 200 buy then everyone gets it for $14 etc etc.
Check it out. New deal everyday starting December 1st

Herald sales reps are selling it. So I assumed they owned it. I've spoken to a sales rep about it already.

From my understanding, Swarmjam is owned by a company called CityXpress Ltd. Their VP of Sales and Marketing contacted me about promoting their deals on my blog.

That must have been my assumption as my Calgary Herald rep came to take to me about it. Guess it's just a partnership then.
