Storm is the only BB I'll compare to the iPhone because it's the only iPhone-like device they've got. And boy is it a horrible device. Don't get the idea that I'm a hater... I've played around with a 9700 for a day or two and that is a very nice device. Personally, I can type no faster on small physical keyboards than I can on touchscreen devices, so the lack of screen real estate is a big loss for me on phones like the Bold.

Edit: to clarify what I meant by better screen... from 3GS to Storm2 you're giving up 1/4 inch of screen, but the BB weighs an extra ounce, and is thicker and wider. Goes without saying that those margins increase if comparing to an iPhone 4.

The only thing I don't like about the iPhone so far is how I have to get used to typing each letter individually. Even then, I hardly ever notice it, and I think it will be something I subconciously do in no time.

The influx of iPhone users in my life that aren't fanboys (I admit I lean that way) were former BB Pearl users. The Pearl was giant hunk of Triceratops poo.

No kidding. I've used one for more than a year and can't wait to get rid of it. Battery pulls, signal almost always at 2 or no bars, terrible web browser, small screen, can't turn off the annoying dropped call sound.

I won't use the tiny physical keyboard found on other BBs, so my new phone will most likely be an iPhone or an Android.

By the way, does RIM still make you pay for the apps via PayPal? I've never purchased an app because of that. Well, that and the fact that I can't find one I would really want to buy.

Hmm, not sure about the app thing. Also, while the original storm was a piece, and the 2 isn't the best phone, it's still decent. After about a month and a half, with a few updates, my phone has hung up maybe once in the past 2 months. The signal's almost always full. The browser's not the best, but I did get opera, which the new version DOES support zoom on the storm.

I do wish the screen was bigger, and, well, I sort of want that torch they're releasing now. I simply value the top push email, and BBM more than others would. The apparent legalization of jailbreaking is a pretty intriguing thing for the iPhone as well. Even if the interface, speed, signal, and everything was the best on the iPhone, as long as others are close, I will go for the device without restrictions.

Not wanting to watch a 15 minute video at this point in the night, why do you say that?

Two things... the phone lags horribly. Internet browsing would be an absolutely painful experience. Secondly, the main features they're advertising as revolutionary for this device have been on Android and iPhone for ages. These are the kind of things that can only be saved by something like an amazing screen or a great app store, neither of which this device has, obviously.

If that video is indicative of how they will all perform, what a piece of junk.

The main thing that piqued my interest is the universal search. I wish my Nexus One had that.

But since you asked... better screen, infinitely better keyboard, better app store, better YouTube quality, better OS. Any of screen, keyboard, or OS alone make the iPhone way better than the Storm2.
Well, I certainly don't want to see this thread dragged down with more Apple and iPhone talk, and I have no experience with the Storm 2 so I can't say, but I do have experience with an iPhone and my Bold 9700 and I will take the Bold every time.

The lag is definitely a problem they will need to address. You can't ship something with such poor performance. However, the OS does looks quite good, I liked the Frequent appsfor example

I didn't see a huge problem with that video. The browser was loading a heavy page. The rest of the video (I skipped through some of it), was fine. Not sure how that is = fail for some.

Because the rest of us just loaded that page on our iPhones for comparison, and the performance is nothing like what we saw in the video

However, on a tradeshow floor like that its impossible to say what the wifi or 3g situation was. The inability to work with a page as it loads is troubling, but even desktop browsers exhibit that behavior at times. More real-world info is needed for sure.

Pretty much says it all. I've seen other videos from yesterday that things are nowhere near as slow.

Android searches your contacts, apps, and web. My understanding of the BlackBerry universal search is that it also searches your messages, email, etc.

Ya there are way too many variables there to just say "omg what a crappy browser".

Signal strength, the website's server, how many devices are leaching off 1 wifi, etc etc can all be blamed.

If this becomes more like the iPhone 4 "your holding it wrong" thing where every customer and their dog is reporting a consitent problem, then I'll take a harder look at it.

An iPhone 4? So basically you're saying you prefer BlackBerry OS to iOS, which is fine. Because otherwise there's not much grounds to justify an inferior camera, inferior screen, inferior RAM, and inferior processor.

I never have used an iPhone 4 and I have to really wonder why every thread needs to become about whatever vs Apple.

I don't care what the iPhone 4 does and I don't care about inferior processor or RAM or whatever. I'm sure many people have kick-ass computers compared to what I currently am typing on, but you know what? I don't care. My computer does what I need it to do and does it well.

Same for my phone. Calls sound great, battery life is fantastic compared to other devices I've used, I use BBM all the time (which I could not do on other phones), typing on the keyboard is a breeze, SMS, MMS, BBM, email is instant using my Gmail account, I have tons of apps I use for free from AppWorld and I have several themes loaded, one that I currently use that meets all my needs, but allows me to customize the screen the way I want and not what everyone else may have.

I also recently was watching Colin James at Telus Stage here at Capitol Ex and took some great night time shots with my BB. Not sure how my camera is inferior. Inferior I suppose if you want to compare specs, but you know what, it did what I wanted it to do. It took great quality pictures at night. And it's a freakin' cell phone.
