Fourthly, Calgary and Edmonton's nightlives are almost identical... they have the same amount of districts and if I'm not mistaken, isn't there a Cowboys there too, and aren't most Edmonton bars owned by that odious Vickers guy.

Fifthly... when it comes to countries that actually spend money in Canada, Calgary is one of the big 4 in Canada, with Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto... granted we are #4, but its a start. The Winter Olympics were shown to nearly every country that would have interest in Canada.

And lastly... my favorite part of watching the World's was when one ABC announcer had the following conversation with the other:
Announcer #1: "So where is Edmonton anyway."
Announcer #2: "About 300km north of Calgary"
Announcer #1: "That's a great city"

4) Having gone to clubs in both Edmonton and Calgary, Edmonton's nightlife is definitely ahead. The Rum, Escape, Dantes, Iron Horse, Armoury etc.

5) Edmonton has been the nation's leader in Economic growth rate many times in the past 5 years. House Prices have increased greatly, in a short period of time. An average house is over 200,000 in Edmonton. Edmonton's very economically developed, and will continue to do so....just look at South Common.

6) Yeah right. Another Calgarian using lies to try to win an argument.

Sundeep
Can you explain to me why the largest travel agency in Japan, sending millions of people to Canada every year, doesn't even have Edmonton mentioned on thier web site?

Also, the arts is a toss. Calgary has CJSW, far better than CITR. We have a small fringe in Calgary, and Edmonton's is very good, but then again, Edmonton doesn't have a High Performance Rodeo equivalent.

As for your choice of night life, the Iron Horse says it all. Get out and into the world, Mr. Malhi. For those of you that don't know what it is, think of a train-themed Denny Andrews....

If you're looking for more delusional people who think they're better than everyone else, go to these clubs. There, you can be charged for overpriced drinks, listening to top 40, while the group of bar stars behind you talk about how cool they are. The night life in both cities is really about the same, and you probably the worst part of Edmonton's.

Not sure how your chosen stats show the spending habits of Edmontonians. The growth rate stat is not my favorite measure, since it's all relative to size. But here's the 2005 outlook for you anyways....Thunder Bay, and yes, Calgary, lead the pack for 2005. 2005 Outlook

IF you really want some data to throw gas on a fire....

Edmonton:
Income Data
Community Data

Calgary:

I don't think you can argue Edmonton is even close economically and in business. Huge difference in housing costs. I'll concede the rivalry's closer in other areas but not here. Take heart though, we're both substantially ahead of the rest of Canada in those stats. (Although what's with all the single moms in Edmonton?)

Immaturity because we call you Greasers? So... if I do a search on oilfans for "Flamers"... think I'll find anything?

As for culture, I'll concede the fact that Edmonton has more festivals and do a good job on some of them. But are "festivals" the only component to culture? Alberta Ballet is HQ'ed here, does that make us even? Probably not. What about food and fine dining? Point is, to try and quantify culture is impossible and is like trying to argue over shades of blue.

Here's the thing. It's a rivalry. Like it or not, both sides are going to say the other has an infeority complex. I liken it to 5 year old brothers sparring over everything, as sooner or later you have to make up. There was a CanWest global article not too long ago about how our municipal and provincial governments would be better off battling Ottawa rather than each other.

In debates with friends I'm usually mindful to recognize the things that Edmonton does have an edge on us but Sundeep's obstinance and hands-over-ears lalalalalalalalala I-can't-hear-you doesn't bring out meaningful debate. Might as well be talking to the TV.

Anyways, I'm off as of today for a wedding this weekend. I sincerely hope this thread is dead by the time I get back as I'm sure we could ALL be doing better things.

Countless times has the term ''Greasers'' been used on this board. You see that immaturity on Oilers boards?

There has always been an inferiority complex on this site. Continously bashing Edmonton, the city, and the people.

Again, do you see that on an Oilers board?

No.
LOL!!!!! Oilfans refer to us as 'Flamers' all the time. I would guess if I looked back over all your posts I would find you doing the same. Get over yourself. If you honestly believe that somehow the entire city of Edmonton is on a higher moral ground then the entire city of Calgary you may be seriously delusional. This entire thread is nothing but raw human emotion; defending his or her home. If you think Edmontonians are somehow a more mature and civilized people why the hell are you on here arguing with us inferior Calgarians? Look in a mirror. You are the same as everyone else pal, you just happened to be born 350 Kms north of us.

Rouge is defientely right about our airport. WTF were they thinking when they put all the way out by Leduc??

To answer Commondore Afro's question, a citys culture isn't dependant on fesitvals, but we have so many of them, and such diversity. There are also museums - not just the Prov. but others like the Ukrainian Village - & countless art galleries. Some artist don't even bother with galleries, they will make a gallery on a sidewalk. We need a winter festival though. When I was a kid in Calgary they had a huge sculpted snow castle by Princes Island I think. And to answer another question Edmonton's background is not western, but a gold rush town, the last stop until the Yukon.

Nightlife?? Calgary has 17th Ave, am I right? We have Whyte Ave, 124 st, downtown, and WEM. You would be shocked at the changes our downtown is going through! Of course our skyline won't be as cool as Calgary for a long time, but I'm talking about all the people who hang out there now. They also got rid of gross bars like the Cecil. When I moved back here 4 years ago, the difference now compared to then is incredible!

As for the city bashing here - I know most of you don't mean it. There are a few here like Rejean, Familia, browna, and Lanny who need therapy, but for most it seems to be all in fun.

But this is getting pretty tiring. Sometimes Oilers and Flames argue about the stupidest things, I swear.

Okay then. In conclusion...

The IAAF is a bigger deal than the Winter Olympics because nobody cares about winter sports. Edmonton, though, is world famous because of Wayne Gretzky, the Oilers and the Heritage Classic. The West Edmonton Mall is an international tourist destination, receiving nearly 600 thousand tourists each and every month of the year.

Yep. It all makes sense to me.

Haha, this 'discussion' is funny.

I've lived in Calgary for 3 years-ish, and I gotta tell ya, I was dreading the day I had to move here. I had the hate for Calgary hard-wired into my brain.

Anyways, I gotta say that I got it all wrong. Calgary's actually quite the place. Here are some of my personal faves:

You can drive to Kananaskis Country in less than an hour. Lots of mountains to climb, and really, just the most beautiful country in the world. Is it fair to claim as a perk to Calgary? I'd say yes.

COP is a pretty kickass facility. It's not the mountains, but then it doesn't claim to be either.

The Calgary Zoo is awesome. World class. Maybe not the best in the world, but it is an amazing zoo, and very cheap for the locals. It's like 10 bucks for a years pass. I guess they make all their money on tourists.

Spruce Meadows is awesome. Never thought I'd enjoy horsejumping, but there's something to be said for a venue that's very arguably the best in the world at what it does.

Problems I have with Calgary?? Nothing's free. I miss the Street Performer's festival, or the fringe, or the Heritage Festival. Good times, and a lot of it is free.

I miss the sports scene. Sure, the Flames are starting to make a comeback in this city, and who knows, maybe the Stamps will stop sucking, but what else is there? The ABA? The NLL? University sports?? Terrible, all of them. I miss being able to go to Commonwealth and watch our national soccer team play. The Golden Bears have always had an awesome sports scene. And of course, my love for the Oil and Esks will never die.

Do I miss the mall? Nope. I went there maybe once a year. I think the mall is one of those things that people just have to see because of how big it is. I can't imagine a Japanese tourist would come back home and make sure he went back to Canada next year because "I just gotta see that mall again!".

Edmonton has a lot to offer, but to hang your hat on the mall? That's sad. Very sad.

Nightlife? Really, I don't care. I'm past that stage in my life, so I'll just have to let you guys duke it out over that.

Anyways, that my take.

ehehe, let's keep this going a bit...sorry

Stamps will stop sucking - it's inevitable as professional sports franchises and their successes are always cyclical (except for the Eskimos...I still can't believe the 33 straight playoff years. I think that's one big massive lie )...and they were still pulling announced attendances of close to, if not over 30K (but sadly, some of the times a lot of ppl didn't show up in the process...I think that may change this year if they get a competitive team out there).

ABA Folded. As expected. boo hoo :P

NLL - I thought it sucked on TV as well...but you gotta go to a game when you have the chance, they're a ton of fun...seriously. (assuming you haven't gone...if you have, ah well).

University sports suck, I'll agree. Can never get into it, and I don't think very many in Calgary cares that much either....Edmonton has that for sure.

...don't forget the Hitmen...the team/their attendance that started this whole mess in the first place.

Subject K-ROCK lays the 2004-05 NHL Season to Rest

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We all need closure to the NHL 2004-2005 season. We all need "friends" to lean on in this time of grief.

Join 97-3 K-ROCK this Saturday, February 5 as we lay the 2004-2005 NHL Season to rest at West Edmonton Mall.

We will start the Procession from outside The Bay at 12:30PM. A piper will lead the casket and our group of mourners to the Ice Palace were viewing of the once mighty "cup" will begin at 1PM.

As mourners pass by, we encourage them to say a final word to the 2004-2005 season, and fill out an entry form to win a pair of season TNT Tickets to the NEXT Oilers' season... whenever that may be.

At 3PM, we will move the casket and the "cup" to Hooters on Bourbon Street for a Wake were we will celebrate the once vibrant NHL league and its players.

To put a close to the death of the 2004-2005 season, we will leave the casket in internment at Hooters at 5PM... at which time we will draw a name to see who will see the Oilers in action... whenever the season comes to life again.

We remind you to wear the jersey of your favorite NHL team to show the league and the players that someone cares about the death of the season.

Regards,

Terry, Bill, & Steve

Inferiority Complex? You betcha.

Today, at the SUB building, I along with another hundred(s) of students, was studying for my midterms. A group of 30+ Calgarians walked into the room (where people were studying) , and started chanting GO DINOS GO for about 15 minutes, disrupting valuable study-time. They also boasted signs like:

"Hey Edmonton, you're mall Sucks''

"Gretzky couldn't wait to leave Edmonton''

"U of C > U of A"

The security came in, and told them to zip it.

Cry me a river Sundeep....15 minutes of your precious time? WOW. I guess Edmontonians get a little uptight when they are trying to study. Remember folkes, Edmonton is the only "smart" city in Canada, we should let them be. What's the matter, can't handle a little "friendly fun and pranking"? Can't handle a rivalry? And to think Edmontonians were such party animals who enjoy festivals and have the best nightlife in Canada...

There's a difference between displaying those acts in a STUDY area, compared to at the hockey arena.

If you're going to do it, do it for a minute or two....then leave. Don't just stand there and disrupt others on purpose....why do you think the Security kicked them out?

I honestly don't know why you even post on a Calgary based site Sundeep. You get upset because you say we live in the past about being the host of the 88 Olympics. I admit the city held on to that for a very long time but those signs were taken down. Edmonton also lives in the past with the whole City of Champions. I know you are just going to say that I'm a dumb redneck cowboy who is uneducated because I don't watch track and field, I never went to University and damn it I live in a city with what you call an inferriority complex. When you come on a site for Flames fans and you bash us why shouldn't we be allowed to fight back? You are doing the same thing, if you don't like the fact that we will defend our city go and post on sites in Edmonton where more people will agree with you.
