The thing is the leafs might try to rebiggle which leaves them open to making a huge mistake in a trade
That’s why if you can get nylander in a win now deal from them you go for it
If we could structure a trade around Weegar and a winger you jump all over it IMO
I wouldn’t give up futures but I suspect that won’t be what the Leafs would be looking for
And yes we have a lot of wingers - they just aren’t very good or old / soon to be gone

Why would they give up Nylander in a win now? If anything they may deal Danford/Cowan/Future 1sts in an overpay

Willy's been good in the playoffs, when he isn't watching from home because of a headache.

So has this trade even gone down? I don’t see anyone talking about it? Radio or television

Out here in Toronto, fans and the media are starting to slowly turn on Treliving. The chatter here is around:
- Not much blame on Marner given Tre came in a few weeks before. Gets a pass in Marner leaving the Leafs.
- Nobody thought they'd finish higher in the standings since Tre didn't replace Marner, but most figured they'd make the playoffs as a more gritty wild card seed and were hopeful the team would find more success despite losing the offense.
- Most were happy at the time of the Carlo deal, but in hindsight, obviously pretty much unanimously hate it now given how things have turned out. Minten's performance in Boston has surprised everyone and the 1st twists the knife.
- More and more mentions of how Treliving left the Flames and Calgary's current situation.
- Most support a re-tool and some want to tear it down. More and more of the media and fanbase are thinking that Treliving will be let go if the Leafs miss the playoffs.

Treliving only locked Matthews into a 4 year deal too. With their current trajectory, theres no way he re-signs at the end of that contract.

As much as I like to dunk on the Wizard, everything I've read makes me believe that the 4-year deal for Matthews was entirely the idea of the Matthews camp. He was never going to sign for longer no matter what Treliving did.

Yeah he's never signed long term deals - that wasn't changing this time around.
And TBH outside of last deadline he hasn't made too many major moves but the mistakes Treliving has made in Toronto, are the same mistakes he made here, he continually spends too many assets on non-premium pieces.
Laughton for Grebenkin + 1st
Carlo for Minten, 1st
Edmunson for 3rd + 5th
Lybushkin for 3rd +_6th
2 1sts
2 3rds
Minten
Grebenkin
5th
6th
And all he has to show for that right now are Laughton and Carlo.
If he were to package that all up last year and offer a team 2 1sts, Minten, and Grebenkin he could have probably acquired a star level player.
But he continually struggles to close the big deals, but then spends all those assets on players that don't provide any real positive impact.
Combine that with letting Marner walk, and Matthews injuries really making him a player not nearly as effective as he once was, and now you have a team that is lacking depth offensively, still isn't strong defensively, and has no assets or cap space to try to fix the problem.

I agree. Matthews only signs shorter term deals to maximize earnings. Pretty smart move, although it carries some risk. Matthews doesn't seem like a guy who cares much about team performance or winning though, seems more like he's concerned with dollars than anything else.
