This is still a very good team. Even if some of the picks are not popular.

They had a stronger team last year and finished 5th. The US, Sweden, and Finland will have stronger rosters imo and so might the Czechs. The Slovaks are also getting better every year too. Canada will be in very tough to medal this year.

These tournaments are often not about who has the best team, as you cannot determine that in a short tournament. Where one close loss can end it for you.

I am cheering against Canada, but I do think they medal. USA is the only team with a clear cut better squad, IMO, and their D seems kind of weak. But their offense should be a juggernaut.
Finland and Sweden have, IMO comparatively weak rosters from years past. Czech and Slovakia will need to have some big surprises from the unknown players to hang around.
Actually, seems like we're entering a period of relative weakness of the crop.

Russia would be icing one of their best squads in years, were they allowed to participate. They don't deserve to, but there'd be some well regarded players on their squad:
Miroshinenko-Demidov-Gridin
But-Ryabkin-Artamonov
Suniev-Surin-Kantserov
Chernyshov
Silayev-Gulyayev
Simashev
Nabokov
Zarubin
Just off the top of my head, all highly picked russians from the last few drafts not in NHL. Obviously Michkov would make this even better, but we're not taking Celebrini or Bedard to the WJC so.

Have heard from a rep of some of these players that these "controversial" picks were mostly a head coach decision.

Cheering against your country because you're not happy with their selections is what is truly ridiculous.

Wouldn't Yakemchuk and Iginla help with that though?

I usually cheer for the team with the most Flames prospects. I always support team Canada in the Olympics, but Hockey Canada has done nothing to earn my support. If anything my respect for that organization and for the World Junior squad is in the toilet and that has nothing to do with Parekh not being on the team. They have been a national embarrassment and have actively protected sexual predators from facing prosecution for over 30 years.

Yea, if anything Hockey Canada should be doing everything in their power to help get their reputation out of the sewer.

Dave Cameron is a joke.
This is all he's got so you'll be damned if he doesn't select his friends kids.
There's at least 3+ choices that make absolutely 0 sense outside of someone picking a kid because of relationships.
Yea, I'm sad that Parekh got snubbed, but Yakemchuk equally deserves a spot.
Parekh and Yakemchuk smarter picks than Akey, Allen and Price.
Outside of Dickinson who's more of a 2-way defender both Yakemchuk and Parekh bring more offensively.
I remain shocked, but it is what it is.

Dave Cameron
Fired by Sens, leaves Yak off
Fired by Flames, leaves Parekh, Tij, Mews (a player from the team he currently coaches), and Morin off

You do realize that HC is in charge of Olympic teams as well as Juniors, Womens, U17s etc....right?
Or am I misinterpreting your point?
My take is that cheering against a bunch of guys representing your country and had no say ih being selected to said team, is just goofy.
"I will cheer for that jersey if Canadian born player X is wearing it but not if Canadian player Y is"
As always in hockey IMO...logo on the front, before the name on the back.

I do think the reaction from fans and media about the names left off the tryout list will make it a near certainty guys like Catton, McKenna and Martone make the final roster. Can’t imagine how much pressure will be on Cameron if he keeps off virtually all of the most dynamic talent from the 2024, 2025 and 2026 NHL drafts.
