For sure, it wasn't possible the way the situation played out...but that whole season was a bit weird TBH.

He was playing through injury all season then like 10 days after the deadline he was shut down to have the surgery right away...which just happened to coincide with him being healthy scratched before that and also didn't allow the Flames to leverage LTIR to replace him.

I've heard some rumours that while they were here Sutter wasn't always on the best terms with Monahan (which made it even funnier the next year after the trade when Sutter said Monahan was captain material and the Flames hadn't named a captain).

So I wonder if there was a different universe where Monahan wasn't shut down until after the 21-22 playoffs and potentially missed most if not all of the next season recovering from his injuries.

Monahan should have ended that season prior to the dealine. Still not sure why it didn’t happen .

I think it was just he was trying to fight through it and wasn't being completely honest with how he was feeling. Then by the time he admitted to it, it was too late to put him on LTIR and add someone else.

Kelowna don't want you for as long term as he was there for nothing.

He was there for 12 years first as a assistant then head same Pattern as Calgary.

He was Kirkland,Backlunds and Barries Jr. Coach plus Benn, weber etc etc. He's got some pretty good alumni he graduated to the big show.

Not including all the great young guys like Rasmus and Co he's seen through the AHL to the NHL.

I think Huska should get big props just for Rasmus. Coached him as head in the AHL for his only year in the AHL then they both made the jump the next year together. I think Ryan's done great with a lot of young d men since joining. I think he's really doing well with the older men now.

In my opinion, the error was losing assets for nothing (there are lot of them from 2015 to 2023) and at the same time there was way too much mortgaging of the future for nothing but a pipe dream.

I hope a team can compete yearly, and hope that if you always get a return for an asset rather than letting them walk away for nothing as a UFA, a team can still improve. And definitely don't spend picks or prospects on chasing a Cup unless you're at the top of the conference.
