Sadly Honzek has failed to impress consistently since being drafted. Coupled with injury problems it’s not looking good for that pick sadly.
I want the kid to turn it around but there’s just nothing in his game that screams confidence or swagger and the little things that should be a no brainer seem like a struggle. I wonder if he’s in his own head, because watching him do just simple plays looks like a challenge for a guy who looked very strong in his draft year.
Real shame.
I will add that Flames brass wanted Parekh to play his aggressive style no matter what, as we saw in both games so far it’s burned him a few times but learning moments for sure. I still love watching how effortless he makes the lateral movement look.
I think he’s trying a bit too hard to make the crazy play that draws attention, though he had a couple behind the back/no look passes that worked but the players were not expecting it. All in due time.

I liked several plays he made. Especially when supporting the play. Nothing that makes you go wow though.
I still think that things will click for Honzek at the AHL level. Right now his game strikes me as something between Jankowski and Klimchuk. Hopefully he finds a better way of using his body to create offense at the pro level.

I think that statement was true about Parekh in game 1. Reckless and played lazy. He was way better in game 2. Good puck mover and good shot from the point. Not a very big guy but uses good body position to get the job done.
I still feel from both games that Brzustewicz is the better all around Dman but Pareck might have the larger upside runway as he’s a year younger. Both are really good though.
I really like Grushnikov too. Plays way bigger than his listed weight.
So far, what this tournament is showing me is that we have a ton of good middle to lower roster prospects right now. I'm impressed by most of the draft picks from this year, and older guys like Stromgren and Morton. I don't anticipate everyone will make the show, but there are quite a few good players that have NHL abilities as long as they round out their game and learn how to get to NHL pace and decision making levels. There's plenty in the cupboard to fill out the roster.
We still need to find our top line guys through the draft, but I assume that will happen over the next couple years. Maybe Parekh (and possibly Brusztewich) can be top pairing defenders, but right now there's just too much to learn on the defensive side, especially for Parekh. I assume Zayne goes to junior for one more year based on what I've seen so far.
All in all, lots to like so far. Many of the better players for the Flames at this tournament are really young, so to see them looking good at that age is encouraging to say the least.
Be patient, there's talent in the pipeline. The team will start to reap the rewards in a couple years.
I agree with you. From watching live the only player that consistently made me think wow was Basha. A number of good defensemen. Throw in guys like Kuznetsov and Solovyov and it definitely the Flames system’s strength.
Like you said though. Top line scoring is going to be the issue. But it’s probably the hardest thing to find.
A good reminder that Poolparty looked much better than Tkachuk when they played in this.
This tournament is fun and its nice to see prospects for the first time, but pre-season has barely started and these guys are just getting into shape. I never read too much into it.

Quite confused about the Honzek hate. He had an amazing game and did many little things really good. He created multiple chances with great passes and was close to scoring multiple times. He used his skating to create separation and was close to a couple breakaways.
You can clearly see all the tools, he has amazing skating and vision. He play better when players around him are good. He is a pass first player and always plays the net front position, so if his teammates are not getting pucks on net - he is not as effective. His play style will translate to the NHL, you will see.
I fully expect Honzek to pop in another year of development, similar to Stromgren. No concerns for me regarding him, just hoping he can stay healthy

It's a good reminder for many who had hopes that Parekh would make the big club this year out of camp. Fantastic prospect, insane numbers and clearly a level above his peers of the same age and stage of development. But his most likely path this September/October will be lots of ice time, lots of opportunities and lots of mistakes as he learns the game at the next level. And that's okay, and was also very predictable.

I get what your saying, but these guys are in shape year round. Still your right, exhibition is exhibition.
