I would prefer a more special, personal way for the Flames to honour Johnny. Jersey retirement seems almost too ordinary when jerseys are being retired all the time. Just my own view.

It feels special in Calgary, a place like Montreal is a different to me. They seem to retire your number just for fun

The guy 16 spots below him on the all-time points list?
Uh, yeah, probably not.
That’s one of the worst arguments I’ve heard against retiring Gaudreau’s number.

The comparison isn’t even close. If your deal breaker for not retiring his jersey is the fact that we couldn’t trade his negotiating rights for a late draft pick after his last season I think you’re just being petty.

There's no slippery slope to retire a player's number. You do it on a case-by-case situation. If it feel right, you do it.
The way I see it, being top 5 in all time Flames scoring and the face of the franchise for 8 seasons combined with the tragic event are good reasons. In my opinion, it doesn't need to be something you do just based on stats and it's perfectly valid to consider sentimental aspects.
At the very least, the number is going to removed from circulation, so I don't see why you also wouldn't raise it and officially retire it to honour the family.

Joe Nieuwendyk is part of Forever a Flame and never left on the best of terms either.

Especially after today and the last week where it became clear how important family was, how special it was for him to be closer to them, and how much him and his family truly loved and appreciated Calgary.
Beyond petty.

Nieuwendyk won a cup with the Flames and we traded him for Iginla, not a close comparison.

I like many others was shocked and deeply saddened at the passing of the 2 Gaudreau brothers. Johnny during his time here was a hell of a player and a great citizen of our city too.
When the cards were on the table, he opted to leave the team high and dry and slow played his way to free agency, intentional or not that is what happened. He may have made the best decision for his family and that’s a fair thing to do, hell I may have made the same choice for my family too.
However he burned this team and this city with his indecisiveness. Between his choice to leave, Tkachuk requesting a trade with honor, and Treliving trading for that bum Huberdeau, the flames cratered. Johnny was the first domino in all of this and I’m fine if he gets the Fleury treatment but I never want to see his number in the rafters.

Not sure what Huberdeau has to do with anything. He hasn't met expectations, but we should stop bashing him and other players who have embraced the city the way they have.

That little bit of 13th ave between 3rd street and Olympic Way needs to be opened up and called Gaudreau Plaza or something like that

It's up to the Gaudreaus when this happens but I hope it happens inside the Saddledome. Looses is impact if its in a barn he never played in. Then they could do another more celebratory thing like a Johnny bobblehead / statue unveiling in the new barn. I also hope they have a Johnny combo of Skittles and purple Gatorade permanently on the menu board.

My take; if JG had never left Calgary it wouldn’t even be a question. His number would be going up in the rafters. My vote would be to retire 13 in Calgary, he was an all time great and easily one of the best players to wear the flaming C. Hope he and his family are honoured in this city permanently.

You know Nieuwednyk had a valid contract and walked out on the Flames for more money right?
He will NEVER see the rafters here.
... and you know the Flames wanted Todd Harvey but the Stars said no right?

Good. I like to imagine Forever a Flame was created for him walking out on the franchise. He was one of my favourite Flames of all time before he sat out like a turd.
