Realistically, I think they're going to stick with Ducharme for a while. Guy won a Mem Cup (albeit with MacKinnon) and WJC Gold (albeit for Canada on his second attempt) so he's already more accomplished than, say, any coach in the Flames organization.

What would Montreal's centre-depth look like if they had drafted Brady Tkachuk instead of Jesper Kotkaniemi?

Yeah, but what is Kotkaniemi?

Tkachuk is a difference maker.

Drafting for positional need over best player available, and Brady was and is that, was a bad move by Montreal - just like it was when Vancouver took Juolevi over Matthew.

Oh, I agree with you. I am just musing about how much worse the Canadiens could be by even further weakening them at their most critically weak position.

they probably don't do the Domi for Anderson trade

Domi

So do you like Kotkaniemi and Anderson, or Tkachuk and Domi? (I'll take door #2)

Julien's contract is 5 million. This is really all a non-starter. Calgary does not spend big money on head coaches and only paying Ward 900K this year and next. Besides not wanting to pay Peter's AND Ward to not even be coaching would be embarrassing for the team and BT. Worst case scenario where it gets really bad under Ward and he needs to go, expect Huska and Edwards to finish off the season. There will be no new outside coach hired unless they can bring back Darryl on a bargain bin deal.

Yeah, good call. I certainly stick with the latter.

... in semi-related news, Josh Anderson has but one assist in his last five games. I am still pretty sceptical that that contract of his is going to be good value at any point in its term.

You likely don't need to offer anywhere near $5M.

Montreal is paying it anyway, so they are probably happy if another team will pick up $1 or $2M of it.

The question is: would Julien take a rest-of-season job to see if he is a good fit with the new team?

A Montreal coach landing in Calgary?

As if. They are in the same division now. That’s be like a Montreal picking up a coach from their normal division rival Boston

Depends on the terms of the contract. Is it possible that Montreal stops paying him altogether if he takes a head coaching job elsewhere in the NHL before his term is up?

Not sure MTL is concerned about the money as much as making the playoffs (and at this moment in time CGY is the team most likely to knock them out)

Generally not how it works...the teams negotiate a bit, but generally the old team is just off the hook for about as much as the new team pays.

Not sure how that would work to be honest. I know his contract is guaranteed so he basically kick up his heels and collect. That being said, next year, even if he takes a discount to say 4 million, I think it's a non starter for the Flames so what is really the point of seeing if there is a fit for a million ? tough one.

I have always wondered how team's allocate coaching money.

I had thought this was the last year of his contract but, yeah, he has 21-22 as well.

I’m not sure if there is a standard for coaching contracts. But employment contracts in general have several different potential outcomes. There might be a provision for early termination payment. Or to present value the future salary and he gets a lump sum. If it was just his regularly schedules salary, his new job salary would be deducted as a mitigation of loss.

I am sure that if the Flames offered to pay $2M (prorated) this year, and $3M next year, that Montreal would take that (that would cut their dead weight cost in half).

Whether Julien would, is another matter.

He was ranked lower overall by most (but TSN had him number 2). But he was among the highest ranked Cs IIRC. Unusual, and I guess the Habs drafted for position.
