Hopefully that's 7 years of high expectations and big disappointment.

It’s really going to tough watching any nhl coverage for awhile with that signing. Leafs have the most fans so I understand but I for one won’t be able to watch and I’ll be getting all my nhl news online. Not that it really matters to anyone but felt the need to say it.

Oh cool you guys get NHL coverage? Living in the states I get zero NHL coverage so that’s neat. The internet is an interesting place, did you know you can tailor your sports coverage quite easily to include only teams you like? Pretty sweet.
As long as Tavares stayed out east that’s super. Isn’t an issue for the Flames and that’s all one could ask for in this situation.

Please stop this talk! It was only a year ago we heard that the Oilers would be the Canadian next team to win the cup. Stanley Cups are rarely if ever won on paper. This improves their chances but there's a good chance they don't win a cup with Tavares on the roster.

Come on man; other fans is what makes this forum great sure some can be tough to stomach but at the end of the day the forum is better for it to have them.
Congrats Leafs

No, it’s really not. Endorsements for NHL players are pretty small compared to other pro leagues, and the more significant national deals are unaffected by the jersey a player wears.

That is a good signing and a super 1-2 punch, which is second to only Crosby & Malkin.
Cap problems like that are a luxury that I wish the Flames had.

Is it normal to structure contracts this way? With the emphasis on signing bonus vs. salary is it meant as an incentive for the player as they get all their money at the beginning of each year?

I thought he would stick with the Islanders as that's what typically seems to happen when franchise type players get close to UFA. By all accounts he liked playing in the market but the organization was at least a year late in making the necessary organizational changes to woo him to stay. I have the feeling he made up his mind a while ago that he was going to go to Toronto given all the boyhood dream talk.

Yeah, you get most of the money up front each year. It's lockout proof if there is a lockout in a couple of years. It also makes the deal essentially buyout-proof in the future because you still get the full signing bonus if you're bought out.

to be fair, this kind of UFA movement is unheard of in the NHL... the last UFA with this kind of profile was Scott Neidermeyer back in 2005

I'm usually one to think that media criticism is overblown, but TSN really has abandoned everything but the Tavares story.
