I’m waiting for the advanced stats gurus to chime in and explain he Fensi’s and Corswick victories to me.
I get that we are out of the playoff race and 12th in the western conference standings. But.... more importantly. What place in the Advanced Stats Hockey League are we in? Are we going to make the Excel 2007 Playoffs?

And did what? Sat there and let Button and Weisbrod do his job? Guy didn't have a clue when it came to hockey. He pretty much got fleeced on every single trade. Traded Jbo, Iginla, and Regehr for absolutely nothing. Tried to give away Monahan because he didn't understand the CBA. Let's say the NHL forgave his ineptitude and let us have O'Reilly. We would now be without Monahan and after O'Reilly played 2 seasons here he would have been a UFA. So it's almost a certainty we would be without either right now. Thank god Jay dodged that bullet. Just like thank god he took a massive swing at Brad Richards and missed. We would still be paying him if Jay would have made that move? Let's not forget some other great moves he made like TJ Galiardi, Ladislav Smid, David Jones, Shane O'Brien, Denis Wideman. Jay brought Cervenka in to fill a center role and the guy was never even a center. I don't think he did anything right other than getting out of the way of people who actually understood the game.

Honestly - I've seen beer league teams care more about losing than this Flames team does. It's become embarrassing to be a fan of this team and at this point - very hard to argue about any possible future potential - especially compared to the hated team to the north...

Puppet Guy and myself tried to start a "Goodbye Gulutzan!" chant but the fans around us weren't interested.
The Puppet on the other hand was a hit with the fans and caught the attention of Flames TV in the third period.

I beg to differ. His signing of Brouwer the picks given up for Hamonic and the hiring of Gulutzen were all heavily scrutinized and rightfully so.

Time to shut Monahan down foe the season, the guy is clearly playing injured and not getting better. Time to heal up for next season .

That’s funny. I was actually saying pretty much that to someone tonight when we were watching the game in our customer lounge. “My crappy Div 2 beer league team with 9 skaters that squeaked into the playoffs against a bunch of ex junior A guys with a full bench put out harder effort than these clowns. And we were paying for the priveledge to get slaughtered.”

^^^ I know right! I kept thinking I'd love to spear Perry or Getzlaf right about now. And you know Rhett Warrener was probably thinking the same thing!

Certainly one of the most frustrating games I have attended or even witnessed from this team for quite some time. It was actually embarrassing the lack of effort. It's pretty obvious that this team has pretty much hung up the towel and gave up games ago.
I would say listening to the Fan on the way home was even more irritating. Listening to Marty Gelinas (and I really like the guy) basically chalk it up to bad luck was pathetic. Listening to Pat and Wills list off stats to try and justify and defend their play was hard on the ears.
Call a spade a spade guys....that effort was border line insulting to fans of this team.

Which means 15-12-6 when outshot.
In other words, absolutely no correlation whatsoever between shots and winning.

I wonder if part of the problem is with the advanced stats becoming more prevalent in the game itself if it is being coached to the players properly. Instead of just going out and doing what they know best their heads are filled with these numbers and it's affecting the way they play the game on an instinctual level. Just listening to Monahans post game interview it sounds like he's thinking more about where he shoots the puck more than shooting the puck itself and let natural ability and instinct take its course.
Could be the constant second guessing we see the players make. I mean if you're thinking about how the stats tell you to play hockey instead of playing the game the way that got you there, you're going to cost yourself that split second to make that pass or shot. I don't know. Just something I've been thinking about for a while now .
There's no way this should be where we are right now given the top end talent that is on this team.

The problem with the Flames style is they leave themselves open to the counter attack and so many goals are scored against this way. And on the flipside the Flames don't seem able to counter attack because they are so caught up in the system, structured breakouts and over thinking.

I think the biggest problem defensively is that the D back in so far that they allow the attacking player to walk right into the slot to take a shot. It's astounding how far they back in without pressuring the attacker.
There are other issues of course, but this one drives me insane. Especially since it is the exact opposite of what Gulutzan said his system would be when he was hired.

Ugh.Decades of Disgust. Just think only one more year and it will be the 30th anniversary of the Flames one and only Stanley Cup victory with almost no other seasons worth mentioning other than being cheated out of one in 2004. Maybe the players are not the real problem,as they say about fish and sometimes hockey teams-the rot and stench starts at the head...

Totally agree. We have lots of good players on this team, and instead of forcing them onto a system, we should be creating a system, for them. Make it fun, exciting, physical, and demand hard work. Then use analytics in acquiring the right players to help fulfill some advanced stats narrative. Isn't that how they're supposed to be used?
