Watch Parsons outplay them all.

With Darling onboard in Carolina it was basically buyout Ward (who's untradable with his salary and history) or buyout Lack or basically sell one of them which they did here. Given their ownership/budget situation - I'd guess there was no appetite for a buyout.

Anyways I guess I won't be making some judgement until the middle of the season. I am not complaining on what we gave up, just want to see the young guys given a chance. Keenan Kanzig I like but there are a lot of young defensemen in the system that passed him on a depth chart. Good luck to him and I hope Hurricanes gives a chance to make the team this season.
Wotherspoon isn't an NHL player

Kulak has had many chances but has been too inconsistent to hang onto a spot. He, unlike Spoon, has big league skill but just needs to be a more reliable defenseman. He'll get the opportunity, I'm sure.

I'm kind of surprised McCollum didn't get thrown in too. He served his purpose in the expansion draft, and doesn't really have a place in the Flames organization next year. Also, he played well for the Hurricanes' AHL team down the stretch last season.

Lateral move from Johnson but at least he's played over 40 games twice in his career so I suppose he's a proven backup for Smith. I can live with this for a season as I'm thinking the team wanted a guy for one season because they hope to have Gillies or another goaltender from their system to back up Smith in his 2nd year. No issues with giving Ryan Murphy a look as maybe a change of scenery will benefit him.

With the Miller to Anaheim rumours, TSN1040 spent some time discussing 'why not bring Eddie back?' yesterday.

Couple interesting things said...

His act is popular with fans, but he has no off switch, so it rubbed some of his teammates the wrong way (I assume he is never serious).

They had a goalie consultant on, he stated that skating is Lack's weakness. The style they coached him to play, with success, accounted for that. In Carolina, he was coached to play a style that requires strong skating, which basically was a disaster.

Hm, so the secret to Lack's success is the goalie coach?

Well ####

This seems like a good deal to me. Treliving getting a backup plan for goaltenders. And we didn't give up hardly anything

Beat out Bartkowski and Murphy in training camp for a job.

Skating and puck handling are areas where Smith might be a big help to Lack.

"Eddie. Welcome to the team. We understand your last team wasn't a good fit as they coached you to play a style that didn't work for you. We would like to introduce you to your new coach Jordan Sigalet."

Murphy used to be so highly regarded. Was probably buried by other young D in Carolina. Will get a shot battling for a third pairing role.

Sigalet gets so much underserved %#^* on here. He's been fed nothing but mediocre veteran goalies, and everyone hates him for not turning them into high end starting goalies...just, whatever.

Murphy is nothing special, really. He'd be behind Anderssen on the depth chart. I still like the add since it cost nothing to get though.

I think Lack is a big downgrade from Johnson.

I searched NHL goalies that played 20+ games in the last two seasons.

There were 112 entries.

I ordered them by save percentage and Lack's seasons were ranked 103 and 107.

John Ortio's final season was 104.

The Hamonic move was great for the Flames but I don't think that Treliving has done well with the goaltending.

Mike Smith is old and average, which is fine if you have another 1B goalie to help carry the load. I thought for sure the Flames would get another Johnson or someone similar.

With the acquisition of Lack, it appears that they may have downgraded their goaltending tandem.

Murphy was the number 8 in Carolina, and has been through waivers at least once.

I just don't see the positive for Calgary in this. I think they should have aimed higher for a backup.

I'd guess Treliving tried to.
