Calgary needs some of the wingers they drafted or prospects acquired to develop and make the jump this year or next. Especially given the trading of futures recently.
* Baertchi asked to be traded or he was going home. So good riddance.
* Granlund was expendable due to the depth on center, Versteeg had a better PPG last year and wasn't playing top line minutes.
* Byron was unfortunate to lose on waivers. Montreal was smart to steal him.

Versteeg had more points than Sven or Granlund.

Prorated he had the same as Byron.

Versteeg cost the Flames nothing.

1.75 million?!?! I'd be willing to pay him that merely for his shootout success. Gravy baby.

You can have 7 and a half Versteeg's, it's called the Vancouver Canucks LOL.

Versteeg at $1.75M for one year is a good deal, but he's a complimentary player. A very good complimentary player as he does a few things very well.

Getting guys like this on one year contracts is a key to any contending team.

Soo Brad

you've just had an amazing off season. Grabbed another top 4 defenseman that the Oilers probably wanted, stole a free agent that they coveted, traded for a new starting goaltender for cheap, and resigned Versteeg for great value.

What are you going to do now?

I said he "produced better"

Versteeg: 41 points in 73 games (0.55 P/GP)
Byron: 44 points in 87 games (0.51 P/GP)

Even excluding playoffs:

Versteeg: 37 points in 69 games (0.54 P/GP)
Byron: 43 points in 81 games (0.53 P/GP)

Are you saying Brouwer and Versteeg haven't proven they can produce at the NHL level?

Granlund has 32 points. Sven had 35. And those were their best years by a long shot. So have they proven anything other than, on a really weak team where they get ice time they can get some points? Even moreso with Byron - the guy had 43 points when his absolute best before was 21.

Versteeg had 37 points and that was not anywhere near his best. Brouwer's 25 was his worst season ever, and he is usually 20 points above that. I think it's reasonable to expect a comeback year from Brouwer and about the same season from Versteeg.

Yes and it's not that I dislike Versteeg, he's just much older than those other guys and they are a good bet to improve (big picture).

I'm looking at guys like Bennett and Jankowski and who their wingers will be. Versteeg and Brouwer don't excite me as much as younger guys who CGY developed (obviously).

Unless Treliving has a deal cooking where he needs the cap space, better off just burying him in the AHL.

Sure, but the point here being that Versteeg was in fact a "net positive" contrary to your needless pessimism introduced above. But I suspect as an HFOilers regular your intention was not really to discuss the merits of this deal, which really can't be viewed as anything but a big win for the Flames

Pro rated to 82 games they were even. Including Baertschi & Granlund for comparison.

Versteeg - 0.53 ppg - 43 points pro rated
Byron - 0.53 ppg - 43 ppr
Baertschi - 0.51 ppg - 42 ppr
Granlund - 0.46 ppg - 38 ppr
