But it's good to just completely get rid of the goalie nightmares from last year so I get it.

By refusing the conditioning stint last year, and not proving to be up to the task, Ortio sealed his fate. You cannot do that if your game is subpar, and on a contract year. He gambled and lost.

As much as I wish that Ortio could do well and like him, he was given ample opportunities and was below average. Simply not good enough, and with other prospect goalies stepping at the door it's time to move on.

What is it like to be an Ortio fan in 2016?

Seriously, could someone who still wants this guy back please explain the mentality somehow.

Did you shed tears when the Flames let Kevin Westgarth and Chris Butler leave?

I like Ortio. I want him to succeed.

But I'm glad the Flames moved on

You see, two years ago he had a stretch of five games where it looked like he might be as good as Karri Ramo. Forgive us if we're not all quite ready to let that dream die.

It isn't like we drafted Westgarth or Butler and followed their progress. Ortio has shown some flashes of brilliance, so some of us got behind him and hoped for him. I'm not saying we don't have better options now but he's been interesting to follow and wish him the best.

Ortio shut out Vancouver once.

His flashes of brilliance are overblown. I take issue with the plural usage.

Better than Ortio on the medium and easy ones, not as good on the high danger shots.

I like how the guys who make those charts just basically make stuff up for their acronyms so they spell "SAVE" or "HERO" or something.

Hilarious.

The mentality is that as a mere 24-year-old his success at the NHL level resembled or exceeded the success of many quality NHL starting goaltenders at the exact same age once you dig into the stats. He also passed my eye test relative to his experience level.

To Each His Own. No need to bash a guy who's still a year or two younger than many a rookie goaltender.

It's fine that we're going the Chad Johnson route but he is what he is, a 30 year old backup. Ortio will be 25 next season.

I like how the chart was made by the same guy that wrote the James Bond books

I like Ortio and I think he has what it takes to be an NHLer.

I think the goal situation was handled poorly last season hence his performance.

Plus, he is still really young in goalie years.

If the goal is to get a goalie for the best years of his career I'd say you would ideally be targeting between 28-33. Always exceptions to that mind you. Nothing wrong with having a 31 year old starter and a 30 year old back up. In fact, I would say it's almost ideal.

If you factor in Elliott and Johnsons' abilities with the acquisition costs and their cap hits Treliving knocked it out of the park.

Ortio still could go on to have a nice NHL career (and I hope he does)but I don't want to keep him on the roster for a few years just to see if he has a strong 6+ month long season in him. Let some other team do that. Matt Keetley was once a promising 25 year old goalie too. What's that worth now?

I think this will be a tough bet to settle because I doubt Ramo or Ortio are even in the NHL this year.

He had a good runway and look at his stats...

This guy probably lost his chance at making it in the NHL. Too much competition...

Oh and a part of me thinks Hartley ruined this guy in small part.

Not sure go so far to say Hartley ruined him, but it was definitely a very unfortunate situation for a goaltender to be in. They simply weren't given the tools to succeed, and if Ramo or Ortio never play in North America again because if it that's quite sad because I really so think they could have solid careers as backup/1b goalies

Ortio was never a great goaltending prospect. Average AHL numbers and below average NHL numbers. At the end of the day just another failed Flames goaltending prospect. 30 NHL teams and their talent evaluators aren't jumping at the bit to sign him so excuse me if I don't buy into Flames fans theories of untapped potential.

He's not a terrible goaltender but he's so mediocre that he's deep in a pool full of mediocre to average goaltenders that teams can pick and choose from when they need to find a stop gap in their AHL or ECHL organizations.

I like Ortio, and I wouldn't have minded him back as a backup for the Flames this season. I just think the Flames have goalie prospects in the organization with higher potential, and better backup goaltenders were available to help the Flames win now. Made sense to move on from Ortio.
