Relying on someone as inconsistent as Ortio for 35+ games would have been a recipe for disaster.
You just don't know what you're getting from him. If he gained consistency, then he's probably in the same ballpark as Ramo.
Turfing all the goalies from last year was the right decision. When they all failed to the extent they did, it makes sense to not have a repeat performance.

Same here. I would have rather see Ortio as a backup and he'll probably be cheaper than Johnson. I only thing I can think of is Treliving is thinking Jon Gillies will be ready to be in the NHL next season and Ortio must be looking for a longer term that Brad couldn't afford to give him.
Ortio may be looking for a long-term but he may find very little interest. He hasn't yet shown he is consistent enough to be a long-term NHL goalie, even as a back-up.

Chad Johnson had an .881 SV% / 3-6-0 / 3.16 in October last season. Just sayin'. Goalies are inconsistent by nature, the ones that aren't are your Henrik Lundqvists.

Ortio was up and down all season. Just way down at the start.
Tossing him out there every other game would be a problem. We need goalies that can put up a .915+ sv%.
Johnson can, Ortio has not.

Damn. Goaltending got much better in the offseason, which had to be the primary goal. It's not ideal, but it's a pretty decent tandem. Johnson, for me, is one of the better backups in the league, despite being terrible in NYI.

Fantastic signing. I am thrilled with how Treliving handled the goaltending situation. Elliott and Johnson, two extremely solid goalies, on low-cost, short term deals. Gives them so much flexibility and allowed them to make additional moves to improve the roster.
I still dislike the way the bottom 6 is structured, but they should be leaps and bounds better next season based on goaltending alone.

If Gulutzan can put together a system the players can execute that will allow the Flames new goalies to put up save percentages anywhere near what they did last year I don't see how this team isn't playoff bound next season.
The offense would have to completely dry up, which seems unlikely given the talent they possess.

Like I posted in the Rate day 1 thread.
Last year: 8.3 million of goalie dumpster fire.
This year: 4.2 million of goalie awesomeness.
A+++ work from treliving.

Haha flames sign one of the best back ups in the league. Fans still complain about it. This guy would have been our #1 last season. I like Ortio but he isn't nearly as good of a goaltender.
Does anyone have that chart for Johnson that shows his save percentages from different areas on the ice like "high danger" "medium danger" "low danger" etc?
I have a soft spot for Ortio and was holding out hope that he'd become a good goalie but this signing tells me Treliving wanted reliable goaltending and I'd agree that Ortio isn't as much of a sure thing compared to Johnson.
Maybe Ortio re-signs and gets sent to AHL to be first call up if there's an injury...

The you would have a 3-headed monster in the AHL - Gillies and Rittich are the starters. Macdonald will be in the ECHL.
There is simply no room left for Ortio. Though he managed to do better after Ramo went down, he still didn't do enough, IMO.
You don't want to stifle Macdonald's development by forcing him to share a net in the ECHL - and Ortio would not be going to the ECHL anyways since he is out of his ELC, so he would have to agree to go down there. He wouldn't agree to go on a conditioning stint to the AHL, so no chance of that happening anyways.
Gillies could go to the ECHL, but I wouldn't think putting him and Macdonald this early into both of their development cycles in the pros would be beneficial.
You could send down Rittich, but that would probably be a surprise to him. There were a number of teams after him, so it would probably seem like a shady move to suddenly force him to the ECHL before he at least has had a chance to show what he is capable of.
I liked Ortio too, but he simply just didn't show enough, and the Flames just can't keep waiting around hoping he takes that next step. Elliott will be the starter. Johnson is a much more proven goalie in the league than Ortio, and should allow the Flames to get wins when he starts in net.
Ortio just lost his place. He didn't help his cause by refusing the conditioning stint either. I don't think the Flames would be bitter about that, but when a prospect is reluctant to follow the advice or wishes of the team, then I can't blame the team for being reluctant to further invest resources into a prospect's development either, especially when the Flames have just massively upgraded that area.
The only place for Ortio right now is on an AHL squad who may not have confidence in their existing starter, or who have had a recent graduation of their starter into the NHL, and are looking for a more veteran presence to help their 1st year prospect along. Barring that, there is the ECHL. I am sure if he wanted to, he could find a job in that league.
My bet is that he goes back to Europe.
