Low hanging fruit guy are ya? Figured you a bit more intelligent than that.

And no...mail delivery is not profitable for CP.

Clearly there would be a need for the government to make sure fringe areas still receive the services that for profit companies would not touch.

Much like the CBC when it was created but now serves no purpose whatsoever except to compete with private enterprise, CP is the same thing.

CP Canada Post, or CP Calgarypuck? I'm sure we hurt private enterprise through lost productivity, but when have we ever delivered mail?

Put a huge sticker on the front on my box last week: "NO FLYERS / NO JUNKMAIL". Checked the mail 3 days ago and there were no less than 14 huge pieces of the glossy admail flyers.

Guess I have to put the sticker inside the box. Should have looked if the entire front panel opens up and that's how they fire mail in the boxes.

Takes time to sift through all that garbage looking for your legitimate mail.

Oh yeah, they totally ignore that crap.

"No Junk Mail!"

Tons of junk mail? Okay then!

And its not just that its annoying or takes time, its a huge waste. What is Canada Post's Carbon Footprint? They have tons of trucks, vans and planes to deliver junk mail all over the country.

On top of that they're encouraging the printing and distribution of garbage. What is all that worth? What will that cost them in Carbon Tax?

If I'm so keenly interested in Pizza 73's latest promotion, trust me, I'll call and ask them.

Really? I actually don't mind junk mail for the fast food coupons but I don't get any because of the "No junk mail" sticker the previous tenant put on the box.

I maybe get 4 pieces of mail a month, and I don't think I've bought a stamp in a decade or mailed anything.

So don't care, the workers can strike for a year for all I care.

Canada Post is supposed to ignore the no junk mail signs. There was a big thing a year or two ago.

As long as postage is paid, be it the realtor or fast food place or credit card company, then Canada Post is obligated to deliver it.

So yah, your solution is for CP to stop competing where they can make money in favour of concentrating on where they lose money. I guess that idea is indeed low hanging fruit for mockery, but that's not really an argument for it being a good idea, is it?

Aside from an ideological blind spot, exactly why shouldn't Canada Post compete with private enterprise in delivering packages - especially considering there is a synergy with their already existing mandate to deliver mail? If they can do it more cheaply than the alternatives, then I guess those alternatives have to step it up, and if they can't do it better, then I guess people will choose those alternatives.

If Canada Post was continually needing bailouts or subsidies from the taxpayer, then maybe you could make a case for unfair competition, but they're not. So it makes no sense to curtail CP's operations for the sake of giant American companies like UPS and Fedex, unless, again, there is a need to unfairly advantage private business "because socialism".

I have no idea how they can not be profitable after my experience with them today. I went to mail a normal envelope to the US, but the object was "just" think enough to not fit through the slot they use to measure. Instead of what would be $1.80 to send it was $8.30. I have no idea how they can justify that. To me its things like this that make them obsolete.

Canada Post denies workers request for two-week extension in negotiations

Quote:
Canada Post has denied the union’s request for a two-week extension to give more time for contract negotiations, The Canadian Press reports.

On Tuesday, postal workers asked the Crown corporation for a two-week extension on the “cooling-off” period in negotiations, over fears the company will terminate its collective agreement this weekend.

About 50,000 Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) can legally go on strike or be locked out as of Saturday, if an agreement isn’t reached between the Crown corporation and the union.

However, the union wants to continue with negotiations.

“We are asking management to give us a chance, to give the public review a chance, to keep sitting down with us at the bargaining table, and give the workers a chance to get a fair deal,” Mike Palecek, national president of the CUPW, said in a statement.

But, but, but, the 2 week cooling off period was collectively bargained for and ergo is the greatest thing ever. Management cant just 'change its mind' on things that were collectively bargained for!

So you guys are saying you want Fedex to deliver your parcels? Like when you miss the delivery guy, and have to drive up to the airport to pick up your package?

Or how about UPS. "Sir, this $20 item will cost you $85 in brokerage fees before we can release it. And by 'brokerage' we mean it sat untouched in a warehouse for 3 days before Jimmy clicked the 'brokered!' icon"

I find this more convenient. When I miss a parcel, I just fire up the chopper and land at the airport - doesn't take too long and is a good excuse to get out of the house.

It's weird how there are a lot of people in this thread who have previously expressed anti-union sentiment in the AB Politics thread sticking up for the Canada Post workers.

I hope this accelerates drone mail delivery development.
Postal/Courier services are all too expensive and too much of a hassle and Canada Post is pretty much 90% admail. Every day I open my mailbox and immediately put 90% of it in the recycle bin.
