Once again, a Phanuef trade that is essentially two teams exchanging their piles of garbage in the hopes that the other one threw out something good.

Yeah, it's basically Clarkson Deal 2.0.

Toronto get's out of a longterm cap anchor by taking on money that won't be on the ice (but won't drastically hurt their cap going forward). Ottawa get's to spend it's money on an on-ice asset.

It's a Rich Team/Poor Team type trade. One needed to improve it's spending cap the other needed to improve it's spending efficiency. That Toronto managed to get that plus a 2nd round pick and B prospect makes them the "winner" here.

Good trade for both teams.

Toronto clears up cap space while advancing their plan to become a puck-moving, possession team. Their most effective defensemen this year have been Matt Hunwick, Morgan Rielly, and Jake Gardiner yet they were paying their effective #4 big cap money to bomb misses off the glass.

Ottawa has had to split up Methot and Karlsson because they have the worst blueline depth in the league. Here they add a middle pair defenseman who's not that terrible, so they can re-unite their top pair, and also add some potential flexibility in case they need to go all-offense on their top pair, as there's a myth that Dion Phaneuf's shot sometimes finds the the back of the net. They also manage to drop Greening, who was their version of Mason Raymond. Lastly they are not a cap team, they are an actual budget team and Dion's actual dollars don't hurt them. His cap hit is meaningless because they will always have cap room.

Dion and his ridiculous pinches cost the Leafs at least two goals on Saturday...weren't the Sens watching their own game? I really don't get this...Sens have an offensive back end already their problem is preventing goals...not Neon's forte

At the very least, from a humanitarian standpoint he has to have known that they've been trying to get rid of him since pretty much the day after he signed that contract, so at least its over with.

Always did have a soft spot for Phaneuf. He was the first named jersey I got. Now that he's not a Leaf, I can root for him. Here's hoping he puts up 20 goals and 50 points next year :-).

No charter for Dion.

For some reason Sportrac has a $2.3M salary cap listing for him. That can't be right.

Looking forward to the next time Phaneuf gets trade, which likely will be an 11-player deal with not one player considered above average getting dealt.
