A good update at this link . . . plus another link where you can watch MSNBC coverage live.

Resident Chris Robinson said via cellphone from his home east of downtown that “I’m not doing too good right now.”

“The water’s rising pretty fast,” he added. “I got a hammer and an ax and a crowbar, but I’m holding off on breaking through the roof until the last minute. Tell someone to come get me please. I want to live.”

Doofus. Next time when someone tells you to leave or go to a designated area then do it so they don't have to risk their lives saving your sorry ass.

A thread on a weather board detailing the damage. This was one hell of a hurricane. One of the worst I can recall.

Does anyone know how many fatalites there were? also what are some of the major structural damage? In that forum only two pages are visible, and all I read was that a hotel collapsed and people were trapped and that a tanker crashed into a marina.

As far as fatalaties go, I have heard numbers in the 50's in Biloxi. Haven't heard about the number in Gulf Port or New Orleans.

Some structural damage:
The bridge from Chalmette to Slidell (eastern part of NO), a 7 mile concrete span over Lake Ponchatrain has apparently been wiped out.
I beleive every parish east New Orleans has been completely submerged. I haven't heard anything about parish's west of New Orleans.

As I get updates from my friend, I will be sure to post them.

Wow, water at a Hospital in NO has gone from nothing at the time of the storm to 6 feet (at the rate of an inch every 5 minutes) currently. Might have to evacuate the hospital. Tulane University Med Center is where that is happening.

2 block breach in a levee holding back Lake Pont from DT NO. Apparently there are currently white caps down Canal St.

EDIT: Just checking some of this out on Goodle Earth (which is an amazing program by the way). That hospital is only about 12 blocks north from the Mississippi. That levee breach is a loooooong way from that hospital. That is an amazing amount of water. Its almost impossible to imagine.

EDIT again: OK, that hospital is about 6 miles from that breach. Crazy.

I'm pretty worried about Southern Mississippi. I've got relatives who live down there. I know THEY are okay--they were in Florida by Sunday afternoon. But I worry about their homes, they're a few miles west of Gulfport...

It'll be interesting to see the reports as the damage is discovered in some of these other locales.

OK, Im a bit of a comparison junkie. That water goin by that Hospital and rising at a rate of an inch every 5 minutes was about 6 miles from the levee breach. TO compare to Calgay, if there was a levee at the Bow River and MacLeod Trail, 6 miles would put you just south of Heritage Drive.

Sadly there are probably many casualties. There are reports of bodies floating in the water and of many people who were trapped in attics and may have drowned.

Terry Ebbert, director of homeland security for the city of New Orleans, said Monday afternoon he is positive there are casualties resulting from Hurricane Katrina, based on the number of calls to emergency workers from people trapped in trees and attics.

In some of those cases, authorities lost communications with those pleading for help.

"Everybody who had a way or wanted to get out of the way of this storm was able to,'' Ebbert said. "For some that didn't, it was their last night on this earth.''

Police are currently fanning out across the city in squad cars, trucks and boats to assess the damage and rescue people where possible.

Ebbert said the city has 100 boats currently stationed at Jackson Barracks on the Orleans-St. Bernard parish line.

Authorities are trying to get a good look at the situation before dark.

The hardest-hit areas of the city appear to be the Lower 9th Ward, eastern New Orleans, Treme and Lakeview near a levee breech.

Ebbert said it could be two months before electricity is restored to all of the city.
He said Entergy will send 4,500 workers to the region, who will be housed in quarters barges on the Mississippi River.

Though damage is extensive, Ebbert said if the storm had passed just 10 miles west of its track, the city would have been inundated with 25 feet of water.

Video in and around Biloxi. My uncle and some other relatives live in the Long Beach area, one of the first places shown. They're okay--they were in Florida by midday on Sunday.

But I imagine they aren't going to have anything to come home to.

The footage of New Orleans right now is completely staggering.

A levee broke resulting in even more flooding. They're also evacuating the critically ill out of hospitals.

Flooding, risk of disease, buildings are not stable, all the usual disaster reasons.

The Superdome has no power, therefore no AC, the sewer systems have backed up, flooding the toilets, there are apparently 30,000 people there now, water is rising around the building, and two people have already died there - one by suicide.

Residents will probably be allowed back in town in a week, with identification only, but only to get essentials and clothing. You will then be asked to leave and not come back for one month.

CRAZY
I think that was in Jackson not NOLA.

I think it's actually Jefferson Parish, wherever that is.

Jefferson is on the west side of Downtown New Orleans. It sits on the south western part of Lake Pontchartrain.
