Yeah I was just waiting for that to be called out. There's no way Backlund compares to Nilson, come on now. And I really like Backlund.

More importantly, he made the rest of the team better. He was the Gaudreau of his time with the Flames. It's too bad there's no AC video of Huselius.
Backlund has his own niche, no need to run down other players to elevate Backlund.
|
Yep, Huselius was so exciting to watch and generated so much of our offense while he was here. Yes, he was soft, but he was extremely talented.
I blame the Sutter era for the way he was treated on here. At the time, Sutter was always preaching the exact opposite of what Huselius was, and there were a lot of Sutter yes men as fans back then.
Doesn't grind! Not a checker! Is European! Dipsy Doodles instead of dumping and changing! Thinks offensively! Has others thinking offensively! = Bad player

Hakan Loob is my favourite Flames of all time, and Backs is one of my current favs...but you can't compare either to Kent Nilsson. He is one of, if not THE greatest Swedes of all time, let alone from the Flames.
I can only assume those who ranked him lower are too young to actually remember seeing him play.

Green text wasn't needed but it was. I know he hated Backlund, but I was mocking him.

Kent had more points in a single season 131, than Backs has had his entire career in 298 games.
Different eras for sure, but c'mon.

Great offensive stats are good and all but you need to play an all round game and come through when it counts, not be a liability. I get that Nilsson was a childhood hero to lots of people, but he was more flash than substance.
Quote:
After an injury-plagued 1981-82, Nilsson went on to lead the Flames in scoring three more years. In all, Nilsson led the club in scoring for five of the six years he was a Flame. Over that span his 562 points ranked 8th in the NHL, and was a comfy 222 more than any other Flame. Yet among 82 skaters who dressed for the Flames over that span, Nilsson ranked a lowly 81st in +/-. The man was renowned for his lack of defensive intensity.

As for Al McInnis, he wasn't a one way player and came through big time when it counted so your argument is ridicules.

Than I can assume that he was a childhood hero to lots who were overly impressed by his scoring stats. There was a reason the Flames traded him for only a 2nd and Minnesota sold him for cash to the Oilers.

I get that in todays NHL especially you need almost all your players to be good two way players in order to win, but to put Backlund and Marcus ####ing Nilson over Kent Nilsson is beyond idiotic. That's Mike Milbury territory.

So Backlund has played parts of 5 seasons (more than 25 games) but only twice over 70 games,
And
Marcus Nilson who played 3.25 seasons
Are better than the guy who lead the team 5 out of 6 years AND still holds the franchise record for single season points? And whose playoff points total as a Calgary flame are
14 games 12 points
3 games 3 points
9 games 11 points
Missed playoffs
3 games 1 point
Lol
Ok

If someone makes an idiotic comment, I don't find it all that disrespectful to call them on it.
Some people here no doubt never saw Kent play, I guarantee if you asked Backlund himself he would laugh at anyone comparing him to the Magic Man.

Marcus Nilsson had one good playoff run and about 60 decent games as a third line checking winger. After the knee injury he was useless. The Flames paid a Swedish team to take him for a year.
Another one of many players who's last NHL contract was courtesy of Daryl Sutter.

You don't need to respect all opinions. There's a such thing as terrible opinion. Like when Polak said Calgary likely wouldn't fill McMahon Stadium for a Flames Cup celebration.
Some things are worthy of a head shake and likewise response.

Good deal. Both the term and salary amount seem pretty much right on par with what we should expect.
I just hope he can stay healthy.

Now I want to see a 82 game campaign from Backlund. Prove he's worth the raise.
