Great signing at a reasonable rate. Good job by Treliving.
Hopefully, Backlund will go on to have an even better season. He's a solid 2 way forward, and has more points in him.

His mother is Finnish.
We manage to overlook that

A little higher then I would've liked/expected, but still fairly decent!

I would not say definitely better. Juice was great stick handler and passer, but Backs wins the board battles and defensively.
For now I would agree that Juice was better, but it's not as one sided as you imply.

Revisionist History.
Huselius is one of the most skilled players to ever put on a Flames uniform, even if he was soft.
34 goals.
More importantly, he made the rest of the team better. He was the Gaudreau of his time with the Flames. It's too bad there's no AC video of Huselius.
Backlund has his own niche, no need to run down other players to elevate Backlund.

Awesome news! I love what Backlund brings to the team, and it's obvious that he loves playing for the Flames.

Woah, really? I think that is terrific value for an excellent competitor. If he gets hurt you may be right, sometimes he is injury prone, but if he can stay healthy it's a great contract I think. I also like the term. Not anchoring to anything forever, keeps Backlund a little hungry.

Well he's never had great numbers, and also has had injury problems. Is a hell of a possession and defensive player though, slightly overpaid IMO. Reminds me of a more offensive Marcus Kruger

Happy with this signing, Treliving is setting up a good foundation.

Just my opinion but he made the rest of the team softer as they tried to get away with the way he played, especially Iginla.

My best Swedes would be
1. Loob
2. Backlund - all round player who has yet to get it together offensively
3. Nilson - solid player who could be counted on in any role
4. Kenta - magic man yeah but one of his tricks was disappearing in the playoffs.
5. Nylander - skill and big producer but his best Flames year was only 55 points
6. Huselius - great skill but a defensive liability

I'm surprised a few people think it's too much term/money. That is excellent value for a guy like Backs. He could have had a 4 million dollar payday somewhere else easily.
Centers are extremely important to a championship. Don't skimp out on centers like the Flames have been doing for 10+ years.
This term & money is really good for the FLames. If he stays basically the same player he is now, he will be a useful player. If he improves, all the better. And if a deal presents itself where we use Backlund in a trade, the deal he has is very tradeable.
I'm very happy with the signing and see absolutely no downside to it.
Bouma and Gio up next. It shall be interesting.

C'mon even Where R U blah blah wouldn't put Backlund that high. He has the potential to be right up there but he's not there yet.

I guess it just depends on what qualities you appreciate.
I think you're a bit confused as Where R U C O didn't like Backlund one bit.

WRUCO would rank Backs below every Swede that ever played the game ever.

You put Backlund and Marcus Nilson - 2 competent role players - over Kent Nilsson? The franchise leader in most points in a single season? The player Gretzkey referred to as the most skilled he played with?
That is like saying Andre Ference and kris Russel were better than Al McInnis.
