Leafs don't care about the money but they care about the cap hit.

Baertschi + Gillies + Reinhart + 3rd?

No.
Way too much.

There's only so many LTIR contracts out there that they can trade for in order to get another team to help them fix their mistakes, they might need to get creative on this one.
Think how much $$$ Vancouver was willing to hold on to in order to trade Luongo and remember that Toronto has much deeper pockets.

Big difference with eating salary and eating cap space. With Horron they pay him but the cap won't count towards the cap. If they eat 2-3 Million in Dion per season then that directly influences their cap and they have dead cap space when this team will want to spend to the limit once they finish rebuilding likely sooner than 6 years from now

Phaneuf at 99 percent retained probably doesn't get Sam Bennett.

Dion could fit on our 3rd pairing at 12 mins/game with sheltered matchups. He gets danced regularly.

I think Russell's steady D/positional game would complement Dion nicely. He hasn't had a partner like that since Hamrlik.

Still not worth it IMO. He is not a #1 dman but will be getting paid like one regardless of who is paying it. Questions about his character, and hockey IQ seem to follow him wherever he goes. If you watch the guy play this year, you will just shake your head at some of the plays he makes. He'll be 30 in April and that part of his game is not getting better as he gets older. Besides all of that - do you really think he'll be happy with being the 3rd/4th guy on this team? I just don't see it. It's just too many flags and I see no reason to give him a second chance here. It's year two of the rebuild and we have some good potential dmen in the system like Rafikov, Culkin, Wotherspoon and Hickey as well as a few picks and some forwards that we could flip for better young dmen. I'd stay far away from Phaneuf.

Which dimension does he even give anymore?

I see what you're saying and agree to an extent. However there is something to be said for increasing Phaneuf's value using this method as they rebuild from the ground up. Look at Nashville and how successful they are not spending to the cap. Spending $ is not a sure fire way to success as much as acquiring blue chip prospects and 1st rounders is.
Six years is a long time to carry that dead cap space though, maybe it would be better to accept a Sutter-like return and save the money for more runs at the UFA market...

Watching Phaneuf play, I have zero interest in him coming here under a long term contract. His skating is just not what it used to be and that's really harmful because the guy is just a bone head when it comes to his positioning, I don't think he can keep up to the Flames speed game. On top of that he's getting huge money for a long term deal and he feels like a guy who's game is going to degrade before that contract runs out.
He's not someone that the Flames should pursue.
I think he should go to Edmonton, storm into the locker room, put his New Kids on the Block CD in the machine and crank that b%%%h

If we take Coburn, shouldn't we be sending excess D-man of the same type like Smid or Eggs? (Leaning towards Smid)
If we took on LeCavlier, would retaining salary and shipping him and/or Stajan to Phoenix be useful move?
No comments about what else we would ship back.
I don't know much about Coburn, but his size really does seem like something that might be very useful on our blue line. Our average height for D-men is around the 6'0 to 6'1 (Ignoring Smid and Potter who are both 6'3)

I hate coming into a Coburn thread and reading so much about Phaneuf. Terrible.

for Coburn I'd do
Coburn + Vinny for 2nd/3rd + B level prospect + Smid/Diaz
IF there's a deal I think this is what it'll look like

That's a little steep on Calgary's part.
Especially when both players coming back are "Cap dumps" and one of them is a 4th line center.
-Smid/Diaz
-B level prospect (likely a NHL knocking center ex. Rienhart, Grandlund)
-4th round pick
We would be doing Philly a solid by taking two big contracts off their hands, so I think they can cut us a break and get by with the bare minimum.
