The mass confusion from the whole Coburn/Colborne thing would explode CP.

Not a fan of Coburn. Would much rather prefer a salary-retained Phaneuf (or full salary + other assets) than Coburn.

Big price difference there. A salary retained Phaneuf is costing a lot. Like Sam Bennett a lot.

You think Phaneuf is going to get a "sam bennett" like return?
I dont think they get ANYTHING close to that. His contract sinks any value he has. (term i mean)

Phaneuf should and would be worth less today than when the flames moved him in 2010. No way he gets a top prospect in return

A 4.5m-5m Phaneuf would have nearly as much value as Yandle did today IMO.

If that is actually the asking price, Nonis is getting nothing done on the final trade deadline day of his GMing career. But for a 4.0-4.5 million Phaneuf I'd give up anyone not named Monahan, Bennett, Gaudreau, Brodie, Giordano, maybe Poirier and 2015 first.
Baertschi + Gillies + Reinhart + 3rd?

I don't see the Leafs eating $2-$3M per season for 6 more years.
As for Coburn I see Flyers fans asking for a 1st plus in return. Way out of our price range

I do not want any deal that includes Gillies being shipped out

The key was salary retained. So if the Leafs retained half his salary for his contract then yes, the expected return would be at least a Sam Bennett. That is a hell of a lot of money and Phaneuf at half his salary is pretty damn good. However I doubt they will retain salary so in that case the value becomes much less for sure.

Why not? They were willing to eat $30m just to get rid of Clarkson. I could see them eating another $18m for a 1st++ while getting out from under Phaneuf. There's only so many LTIR contracts out there that they can trade for in order to get another team to help them fix their mistakes, they might need to get creative on this one.
Think how much $$$ Vancouver was willing to hold on to in order to trade Luongo and remember that Toronto has much deeper pockets.

I hear ya but you got to give to get and I'm thinking the Leafs aren't very confident in their long term goalie situation. Gillies is a legit blue chip goalie prospect and it still leaves us Ortio, who also looks like he's going to be a very good goalie in this league. I just don't think any combo of B/C level prospects such as Baertschi, Granlund, Reinhart, Ferland, Agostino, Hanowski, Shore, etc. is enough to get Phaneuf with salary retained.

Why would we even want the pylon that is Dion Phaneuf? I would much rather keep Gilles and even Baertschi over getting Phaneuf, even with salary retained. Let's just stay the course

Significantly more.
That would require Toronto to carry 2-2.5M per year off the cap for over a half decade.

Dion is most assuredly not 7 million dollar, #1 defenseman. However, for 4 million dollars he would be a very solid #3/4 guy, which we are sorely lacking. Despite all our good drafting we are very thin at D. Gio-Brodie, Russell-Phaneuf would be a great top 4 for the next few years. I think Russell's steady D/positional game would complement Dion nicely. He hasn't had a partner like that since Hamrlik.

How much is 'significantly more'? 2 1sts and a Duclair?

Agreed that he could be a good number 3 or 4 guy, but we are still in Year 2 of the rebuild. I know its tempting after this season, but I would rather not trade one of our top two goalie prospects for a one-dimensional defenceman
