Like the SC87 brand labelled after Crosby that you see advertised on TV, Johnny Hockey 5-6 years down the road is very possibly going to be a similar brand name and a big seller. His agent recommended it for good reason, you don't want someone else coming in a trademarking the name/tagline before you do.

People hating really need to educate themselves. It's not an ego thing.

Rob Kerr just mentioned this was done in defence of some obscene shirts out there.

Look what you've done TorqueDog.

Johnny should trademark "Suck it, Healy" too.

Nah, that needs to remain free for public use.

I think it's smart, here's the video link from TSN where he explains why.

The sight of one T-shirt, in particular, seems to have put the wheels in motion.

When Johnny Gaudreau’s agent noticed the eye-catching slogan — “Johnny (Effin’) Hockey” — he went to work, applying for “Johnny Hockey” trademarks with patent offices in Canada and the United States.

Understandably, this garment is not something Lewis Gross wanted associated with his client, a hotshot rookie with the Calgary Flames.

“There were a couple shirts, a couple things, that were derogatory,” Craig Conroy — assistant general manager of the Flames, who was represented by Gross during his playing days — said Wednesday at the Saddledome. “Lewis said, ‘We just want to make sure we monitor it.’ And that’s all it was.

“More than anything, it was to make sure that people weren’t selling stuff that made him look bad. I mean, I think that’s what it came down to.”

The minute it comes out publicly that it was his agent's idea and Johnny is doing it to prevent derogatory usage of his name, the discussion on HF slows down. Huh, weird. It's almost like people search for something to be angry about when it comes to him.

Haha, HFboards runs like clockwork;

Step 1: Wake up

Step 2: Make other team's fans aware of something good about your team

Step 3: Get outraged at something about another team

Step 4: Go to sleep

Probably these:

NSFW!

Seems like they are making some good money off them as well... $30 for a t-shirt seems rather excessive to me.

Now it makes sense, trying to shut down the negative association

ya, that isn't right. Kids love this kid! no way shirts like that should be in the public for people to be exposed to. Good on JG to TM that name. I think it is a good idea.

Am I a bad fan for wanting to order one of those shirts? I'll only wear it around the house...and when the kids are sleeping.

Man, how sweet is it though that Johnny already has more points than all of the Oilers' beloved first overalls and "Ebs" in only his rookie year?

I'll take him being called out for his alleged "ego" for that kind of point production any day. It's mostly just finding something to be angry about for general NHL fans around the league who are hating on him, but with Oilers fans it's so obvious to tell it's bitter jealousy.

I have a hard time believing that Gaudreau is unrealistically egotistic. The guy has been crapped on his whole life for being a small athlete and hes silenced the doubters at every turn.

I can see where that might build up someone's ego and I also understand that you cant always believe what you see in interviews but he seems like a pretty down to earth and humble guy.
