It's true, however he did answer my question correctly.

Do any of our prospects wear #14 with their junior teams? If they aren't going to retire Theo's number they may as well get it back into circulation. If they aren't going to use those numbers what is the point in not retiring them?

The decision was announced in late December. Gilmour considered taking legal action against the Flames before choosing to walk out on the club.

His response was more about the corruption of the process than anything else. If something like what happened to Gilmour were to occur today, the NHLPA would be hammering the NHL over the head with anti-trust lawsuits.
Once again you missed the point, what does that have to do about walking out on his teammates and dressing room.... He quit on his locker room . There's a big difference between what he did and what Nieuwendyk did

There is no difference between what he did in January or if he did it one day before playoffs.

Technically Fleury wore it again not too long ago.

Have to agree.

If they'd signed Theo I think some of the media pressure would have been deflected off Phaneuf, Regehr & Sutter. He would have shouldered some of that burden, plus he may have provided a bit of secondary scoring (which we were lacking after Cammy left for Montreal). Maybe those crushing trades would never have happened after things went wrong. Maybe that ruthless Theo win-at-all-costs mindset would have transferred into some of our uninspired players that year. Maybe we would have won the cup...

Oh well, Sutter.

I thought he had a good camp and pre-season, but I didn't even care about any of that. My favourite player growing up could have come back, that's all I was interested in

Yeah, that's how I was too, no real plan of how I expected it to go down, it was just "OMG, need to be there!".

I actually sold my pre-season tickets to the Islanders game earlier that month, then went back and paid like 3 times as much for the same section to be there when they announced he'd be playing that game. So worth it.

I was hoping Theo would be platooned as a 13th forward and brought in and out of the lineup opposite a goon. Theo in for scoring, 2nd, PP time, and - most importantly - the shootout. He would have played 5 to 7 minutes a game.

(I always thought that Theo and Robert Reichel were two players whou could have played into their 40s as purely shootout specialists)

Goons brought in when needed.

Only problem with that plan was that if you ever got vintage Theo, you'd also need a goon in that line up as well.

I remember waiting for Fleury to have a bad game, giving them an excuse to cut him. It didn't really happen.

He easily made a case for himself to warrant a contract. Would have been quite an achievement. Always loved Theo as a Flame.

Edit: also I don't like retiring numbers. I understand the logic behind it, but I don't like it.

If I was a 40 year old Fleury sitting at home watching HNIC and they interviewed the current #14, asked who their favorite player was growing up and they said "Fleury that's why I wear #14". I would like that more than a jersey retirement TBQH.

.

I really don't get how #3 is amazing, but #15 is brutal, because he's a defenceman. Would Nicklas Lidstrom have been terrible if he put a 1 in front of his 5?

I remember Theo picking a guy's pocket at the Flames blue line and turning up ice with one man to beat.

By the time he hit the far blue line, there were three defenders back and two Flames holding up to keep from going offside. And that was only a preseason game.

Theo was my favorite Flame even years after he left, but in his comeback his legs were gone, and no amount of heart could allow him to keep up in the NHL.

The Flames saved him a lot more embarrassment by sending him home, IMO

Numbers are numbers. It doesn't matter about the number on the back, it matters about the logo on the front.

Don't be so arrogant as to think that my disagreeing with your point is the same thing as not understanding it. I get your point. I get why you are angry at Gilmour. But frankly, I don't find what he did in 1992 to be any worse than what Nieuwendyk did three years later. This is, in fact, for pretty much the same reason why you hate Gilmour so much more: context and circumstances. Gilmour's walking out can be argued as worse because it was mid-season. But I am saying it was also more justified because he was screwed over by a corrupt process.

tl;dr: It happened a quarter-century ago. Time to get over it.

It always strengthens the argument when you include a fictional character.
