Crazy that there were 3 named captains serving in years '83 through '87, even if they were hand-offs of the label.

If that's the case, then in 2015, the captain of the Flames will be Ryan Smyth.

If you view the list obviously Simpson came after Fleury and "kick started" the young guns era

If you view the list, obviously Simpson was followed by Smith. If Simpson was ‘keeping the C warm for another Face of the Flames’, then Smith must have been that face. Something wrong with that, says I.

I remember that year and it was clear that he was the only choice at the time.
Dark times indeed.

Todd Simpson - while arguably being a marginal NHL'er - was definitely a decent choice for captain at the time. Hard working, and never backed down at any time. He had great intangibles. Anyone seeing him fight Domi wouldn't look down on him too much. Kid was a warrior that left his all on the ice.

Todd Simpson was a really interesting study. Clued in real quick we needed toughness on the back end who was willing to instigate back the scrap. Well spoken in interviews and did the off ice circuit. He made it very dificult to ut him. He hung around and made himself a career. A the time he broke in, there were much more highly touted young d-men that he beat out.
I liked him.
