People really shouldn't be surprised by his comments. I always knew he wasn't "enthused" about being a pro athlete. He showed up to his first camp out of shape. Management asked him to work on it...he didn't. He showed up again woefully out of shape for the pro game. He got sent to the ECHL and they said "work on these things"...to which he didn't do anything much about it and made zero progress.
When someone doesn't get any better over several years and they are still young, it's usually because they don't have the passion for it. It's ok, I ain't even mad. I just hope he finds something to be passionate about. Those who don't often lead very tough lives.
Good luck Ryan.

Agreed that there is. Nothing wrong with a young man figuring out he doesn't want to be a hockey player with his life. Good to recognize that and peruse something that makes you happy, or try various things to see what does. Just because you have the ability to do something doesn't mean you have to. What's the line from Harold and Kumar, " just because you are hung like a horse doesn't mean you have to do porn"?
However, if this is simply "my hearts not in it" meaning I'm not into anything and I've decided I want to waste away doing nothing but partying, nor worse an indication of worse troubles, then that really is to bad and a waste of talent, if he's not Applying himself anywhere.

Playing in the ECHL isn't exactly the glamour lifestyle either. Long bus rides... away from home... and its not like junior where you're the king of the city and playing with a bunch of kids in the same boat. If he wants to move on... go for it. He's doing the Flames a favour by saying it and not just fiddling around for a year earning money and taking up a contract spot.

not to take anything away from your point, but I would think the Aces would usually do their travel by plane instead of buses, given their location.

Good on him to be honest with the organization and part ways this way, rather than just go through the motions for a season and waste everyone's time.
Kid does have some character owning up to it and just being honest. Good for him!

Good luck to him on whatever he chooses to do after this.

Actually it sucks for Howse. I don't know if his family is well off and maybe he doesn't have to worry about a career but if he doesn't have that to fall back on he's going to go through times where he will realize he let the chance of a lifetime slip through his fingers to make six figures or higher annually to play a sport. Oh well hope he finds happiness after hockey.

It doesn't suck for Howse if this is what he wants. Weird thing to say honestly.

Today it doesn't but he will probably look back like many of us have as a poor decision we made in our youth.

Just caught the end but Feaster was discouraged because he does not think Howse has a plan going forward.

It's a shame but the kid made his own bed here. Didn't want to put the work in to be a pro. Time to move on and hopefully the kid isn't serving Tim Hortons in the future.

He also said that they didn't have to terminate the contract, they could have just suspended him.. But it was time to cut ties.. I agree, keep going on the positive attitude train that they are doing.

I'm sure if you asked a few "career minor leaguers" if they should have realized the dream was dead earlier, and I bet more than a few wish they had moved on from hockey sooner.
Howes may get on track to another six figure job sooner by doing this.

I doubt that as believe it or not for many playing hockey is " living the dream" regardless of the league. I think he had the talent to at least have an AHL career which isn't a bad living. Regardless he's made his choice and is now part of the past.
