I wonder how many atheists are cardinals, we know that there is a fair bit of them as priests but there has to be some higher up.

More of the same though. I was hoping for someone more liberal, but I knew it was a long shot.

Interesting name he picked. One news site suggested it is after St. Frances of Assisi who isn't just considered the patron saint of animals and the environment, but was also involved in trying to convert muslims during one of the Crusades. The popes usually have some kind of reason for picking the name they do.

I wonder if every Cardinal has their 'Pope Name' already picked out in the back of their minds, just so they're not caught on the spot....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Francis_I
Quote:
He has affirmed church teaching on homosexuality, though he teaches the importance of respecting individuals who are homosexual. He strongly opposed legislation introduced in 2010 by the Argentine Government to allow same-sex marriage, calling it a "real and dire anthropological throwback".[7] In a letter to the monasteries of Buenos Aires, he wrote: "Let's not be naive, we're not talking about a simple political battle; it is a destructive pretension against the plan of God. We are not talking about a mere bill, but rather a machination of the Father of Lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God." He has also insisted that adoption by homosexuals is a form of discrimination against children. This position received a rebuke from Argentine president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who said the church's tone was reminiscent of "medieval times and the Inquisition".[8]
I really hope he at least changes the Church's stance on contraceptives... in particular condoms

Hopefully he doesn't change them back to what they were. Benedict XVi said that they were acceptable for disease preventional until a better solution is found..

Not sure about that. The last pope was 78, but before him John Paul II was only 58 when elected. Before him John Paul I was only 65 when elected. Before him Pope Paul VI was also 65 when elected.

So while the Pope does tend to be older, this one is certainly older than average.

According to wikipedia, the average of election to Pope in the last 300 years is 65, and Francis I is the 9th oldest pope elected since 1295.

I am curious as to why nobody has infiltrated the high ranks of the Catholic Church. People to get in and reveal all their dirty laundry. It's obvious this guy is just another in a long line of cover up artists. This organization is living in the Stone Age, and unfortunately so are billions of its followers.

Do you know how long it takes to get there?

Who's going to give up their entire life to get there just to infiltrate to the highest levels of the church.

Its not like you can show up at the Vatican tommorrow and say give me a job preferable one that gives me one of those fancy red robes.

Its a tough life.

Great quote I saw on FB tonight

Quote:
The year is 2013. We've gone to the moon and are exploring Mars. We're curing HIV and creating human cells out of stem cells. We're making computer circuits that would stun anyone from a few decades ago. We're making incredible strides in alternative energies and batteries that will eventually make oil obsolete. We're making scientific discoveries on a scale that should give everyone hope for the potential of the human race.

And today a man was elected to an office that gives him alleged spiritual and moral authority over the entire human race, who described the pro-choice movement as a "culture of death", who thinks homosexuality is "demonic in origin" and "real and dire anthropological throwback", and seriously discusses the concept of eating the body and drinking the blood of a 2000 year old mythological figure.

I just hope I live to see the day where the dogmatic irrationality of religion is dismissed for the useless nonsense it is.

Yes, yes, we're all familiar with the plight of the Oilers, but what of the Catholic Church?

You'd have to be quite ruthless to accept all the collateral damage that spreading their message enough to successfully infiltrate them would do. To infiltrate them, you'd have to act like them.

Hey, maybe pope Francis has actually infiltrated them, and he has done such a good job that you can't tell.
